"not due" items appearing instead of new characters

fangaili   October 6th, 2012 2:01p.m.

I sometimes want to add a lot of "new" vocabulary to my study sessions. (It's not really new because I've studied it before, but not on Skritter.) What I want is to review items that are around or exceeding 100%, and when there aren't any, to add new characters. However, even when I'm mashing the "manual add" button, I have series of 4 or 5 "not due" items come up that are in the 60-70% range. How can I push these not-due items aside and study new characters instead? I have tried using the manual add button and the "fast" add word frequency, but I'm still running into this problem.

(My apologies if this is a newbie question; I tried reading the FAQ and searching the previous forum entries but didn't find anything.)

Are you getting any new words added when you're mashing the manual add button? The manual add might just not be keeping up with you; it does have a bit of a delay.

If you're not seeing any new items, then that's a problem. But you should get one new word each time you press the manual add button, accompanied by a little message saying that a word was added in the top of the writing area. The message may come several prompts before the word shows up.

Also, are you on live or beta? There might be some new bug with the manual add button not working. Can you double-confirm that setting adding to "fast" doesn't add words, either?

It's not that it wasn't adding words, it's that it was giving me many not-due items before giving me new words (and I have a ton of new words it could give me). Is there a way to skip these words and review them later when they are closer to 100%? I just don't understand why it would give me a 60% due item instead of giving me a new word, especially when I have "fast add" on and I've been pressing the manual add button.

Hmm.

Had you just loaded the page, or was it a session that had been going for a while?

How many new, never-reviewed items would you guess you had already added when it gave you the old ones?

Were there 70-100% due items, too, when you saw the 60-70% items and wanted the new ones?

Hope to figure this out for you.

The session had been going on for a while.
# of new, never-review items I had already added: probably over 100.
Were there 70-100% due items, too, when you saw the 60-70% items and wanted the new ones? - No.

I wonder if it isn't some bug in how the local Flash client is spacing things out. If you see this again, can you refresh the page and see if you start getting the new items instead of the not-due ones?

I have a fix coming up on the 15th to how the client-side spacing is done, so if that's what is causing the problem, then perhaps it will help. Otherwise, I'm not sure.

Ok, I will try that next time. Thank you for looking into it.

I am having the same problem and I think I do have it on both the stable/beta and IOS versions. Right now I had added some new words and started to practice. Got items due 145% then 67% then 120%, then 154% etc. etc. Jumping up and down and after a a few of those i got words I added days ago but not the new I added today. Similar with the devices. Even if i sync them exactly I will get different words to work with on all of them. Seome of them will eventually come to each of them but many others will take a very long time before I see. I do currently have a very large backlog if that maybe affects it.

Mandarinboy, it's not a deterministic order, so when you have lots of due items, the order in which they're loaded session-to-session and device-to-device will vary. This will happen especially at the beginning of a session and especially when you have a ton of them.

I think that could explain what you're seeing, although it seems that seeing that 67% one in there is indicating some sort of bug.

This has always happened for me as long as I've been on skritter, if the internet connection is being dodgy, the frontend runs out of new words and gives you one's you've just done in the same session. A manual add which is slow because of needing to work a long way through an already done list can provoke this.
