TOCFL Vocab List

fangshi   May 16th, 2012 10:12a.m.

Hey guys,

I would like to know if there is a list for the Taiwanese TOCFL Level 4 and/or 5. Its the Taiwanese eqivalent of the HSK.

I tried to find it, but I wasn't successful.
If you guys could help me, that would be really appriciated.
Otherwise any other ideas on how to prepare for the test, besides doing the mock test on their website?

Here is an xls of the various TOCFL levels (I saved it while it was in the level 4 section, so should just open to that section) you could use it to create a new list on skritter, just copy and paste the words from the Chinese columns into a complex list, divide the skritter list sections the same as it's divided in the xls.

Awesome, thank you russell! Really appriciated! :D

Are you sure, its from the TOCFL and not the older TOP test?

I ask because the new Test has 5 levels, with Liuli 流利 being the highest. Your list is only devided up into 4 levels, with gaoji 高級 being the highest and containing pretty advanced vocabulary.

One of the links is http://www.tw.org/tocfl/ . The lists can be found in the section “Downloads” on the left hand side.

OK, a list that is marked with 流利, 高階 etc. can be found here. http://www.sc-top.org.tw/chinese/download.php , see the link 華語八千詞. This one is for the test administered in Taiwan. The 中級, 高級 one is for overseas regions.

Sweet, that what I was looking for, thanks alot dude!

Since I am still fairly new to Skritter,

any advice on how best to convert the 流利 and 高階 Excel sheets into Skritter lists?

The are ordered alphabetical, so if I would just copy them into a list, it would be fairly predictable and boring if I have to first learn 200 words starting with A, than B, C, etc. Is there kind of shuffle function?

Also, there is a limit of 200 words right? So if I have 5000 would you just devide them into 25 sections? But than again, I would have the problem of making lists which only consist of words, which pinyin would start with one or maybe two letters... any idea for a elegant solution?

I'm working through these lists made by spacemonkey:

http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=91215598
http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=91261549
http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=92266811
http://www.skritter.com/vocab/list?list=91319365

Incidentally, the search function for user-made lists is absolutely terrible. Just try to find these by searching for them. Not even the "tocfl" tag seems to help. I'd joke that a better search feature is more important than an iPhone app, but I think my attempt at humour might be misinterpreted. ;)

Dependable Skeleton: Thank you. That looks good, BUT again, its not exactly the same as the TOCFL INSIDE of Taiwan, which consists of 4 levels.

So pts in an earlier post said "the (4 level system) 中級, 高級 one is for overseas regions."

Does that mean if I would participate in the TOCFL OUTSIDE of Taiwan they use a 4 level instead of a 5 level System?

Overall its 8000 characters in both anyway, I guess, just devided in 4 or 5 levels. Still a little strange, why would they use a different scaling system in foreign countries? :S

Besides, I totally agree the search function for vocab. lists is a mess, so thanks for pointing out the right lists for me! :D

fangshi   May 22nd, 2012 11:26a.m.

Actually comparing the lists it seems like the 4 level system beginner lists more or less combines the others systems 入門級 + 基礎級 lists. I will start with List Number 3 then to prepare for the 高階 (in Taiwan Level 4) test then. ^^
Thanks again, bro. I am so happy to have those lists. Makes Skritter twice as valuble for me! :D

Copied from the bottom of page 9 of this FAQ at http://www.tw.org/top/top_intro_e.pdf :

Starting from 2011, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced levels of TOCFL (formerly known as TOP) administered in Taiwan will be renamed Learner, Superior and Master levels, corresponding to B1, B2 and C1 of CEFR. For overseas regions, TOCFL is still paper-based and the names of the three levels remain unchanged. There are 100 items for Learner, Superior and Master levels, while Beginner level still has 80 items.
Note: Overseas regions adopting pilot TOCFL still administer paper-based tests, with Beginner, Learner, Superior, and Master levels.

Then, there's also a Chinese version at page 8 of the Chinese section (after the English version):

The English version differs slightly from the Chinese version. I think the Chinese version is more accurate as the English version is a mere translation of it. Summarizing,
- The new names correspond to a new version of the tests.
- The new versions have only 100 instead of 120 questions.
- Taiwan will administer the new version tests and they are computer-based.
- The oversea centers still use the old version tests and they are paper-based.
- The new versions are also available at some pilot TOCFL sites overseas, but they are still paper-based.

It seems that both the new version tests and the old version tests are TOCFL tests. The names are changed only reflect the number of questions tested and has nothing to do with the vocabulary tested upon.

TOCFL has 5 levels. Besides the Beginner, Learner, Superior, and Master levels mentioned above, there's is also a 入門級. But I can't find any test for it. So, it seems that there are only 4 test levels available anywhere in the world.
