Single-Character Words in the Japanese iOS app

weirdesky   May 16th, 2012 1:38p.m.

I think there's a significant problem with the iOS app and single character words (especially as new words). When I open up the iOS app, it says I have something like 500 reviews or so, and then when I complete one or two words, it'll drop by about three to four hundred. I was curious about this, so I started reviewing in the web app to find out what was going on. Sure enough, it looks like I had about... well, I'm currently adding my 106th new word, of which a disproportionate number have been single-charactered. I've seen some from a good 5 lists back, that I've had completed for about two weeks now. I don't recall ever seeing a single character word appear as a new word in the entire time I've been using the mobile app, but my memory isn't really that good.
I'm not sure if this problem extends to single character words on review, but I'll notify you if I see them as reviews just fine.

I don't know about the Japanese app, but I noticed something similar (but less extreme) with the Chinese app at some point. I think it had to do with the forced spacing that the app incorporates (perhaps in a different way than the website). That is, individual characters are also added from each word, but there is some spacing algorithm that doesn't allow them to appear side by side (in fact I think it might be a time delay). Thus you end up clearing your reviews in the app but online there are still some remaining - the single characters that the app is pushing to further in the day. Maybe this is related to what you're seeing, although in general my discrepancy is never more than a dozen or two, but I add mostly words with characters I've studied (*learned*) already.

Alternatively, it could be because you've used the "Save Me" function on the website, which I previously noticed was not obeyed in the app (i.e. I had 20 reviews pending online but a couple thousand in the app).

The Skritter guys will probably ask you to submit a formal bug report with your app information...

I don't think it's a spacing problem. Among the limbo single character words, there were 侭 and 嗽, characters I had legitimately never seen before.

I've always had the problem of more words in the web app than in the mobile app.

I have not used the Save Me function.

Alrighty, it looks like I had about 200-300 single character words built up from all over all of my lists that were not appearing in the mobile app. Among theses was 様, which I was complaining about being eternally at 10 hours. I think this was the fault of the mobile being completely unable to show you certain words. So, to show this, after I had finished all my new cards (or most of them), I then reviewed the final 50 reviews (which consisted of single-character words, or other words that for one reason or another failed to appear in the mobile app that I failed on my first try). The following image is of My Words before I then finished these reviews in the mobile app on the left, and then on the right, I had to search for the word 影. Even though I was not tested on it in the mobile app, it was pushed back to 11 hours.

Furthermore, although this primarily is happening with single-character words, they are not the only ones affected. In the previous image, you can see that the word 何方 was among those to be tested. Then, without me being tested it on it, it was pushed back to 11 hours (on the left, that's me typing this post—so meta):

So yeah. Anyone else out there using the Japanese iOS app whose able to review either of these characters on your devices? Or, really any single character word?

This, I believe, is another one of the bugs I came across myself while figuring out that syncing bug, only just now got to it and fixed it.

What was happening was the app was erroneously thinking you didn't have the data you needed to study those items, and when that happens the item gets pushed back exactly 12 hours (and then appears as 11 hours out since by the time you see it, it's 11 hours and change). With this fix in the next build it won't make that mistake anymore and should have you study those items normally.

Oh, okay. I was kind of curious about it (and how on Earth I never noticed it). So this'll be a... 1.0.0 fix? Or like, 0.9.99? (Is it included in 0.9.9?)

I actually started using my Wacom pad on the web app again, because I was too worried about losing these words XD I'm happy you were able to get it worked out so quickly. Thank you!

It goes from 0.9.9 to 0.9.10, and onward from there! Don't trust the version numbers. ;)

weirdesky   May 17th, 2012 9:45p.m.

Alrighty. I'll be looking forward to 0.9.10, then.

Also: It looks like you upgraded the logo with a little Skritter fuzz ball for 0.9.9? I like it—it's pretty baller. I was super sad when you changed it to the canvas-y thing (waaaaay back when)

jcardenio   May 18th, 2012 4:27a.m.

I think this one came in a couple of updates ago? But agreed, I like the logo and he looks damn excited to be writing.

The Japanese logo was just finished recently--the Chinese log has had a fuzzball for a while. They're in the colors of the China / Japan flags, but hopefully it's subtle enough to not arouse the ire of those who take offense to a China == Chinese equation. I will post the logos on the Twitter/Facebook/Google+ feed soon; they're adorable.

weirdesky   May 18th, 2012 1:25p.m.

What are the little fuzzballs called? Just... fuzballs? They don't have a special name like squigs or baller or stuff like that? XP

nick   May 18th, 2012 7:37p.m.

Skritters.

weirdesky   May 18th, 2012 7:43p.m.

That's fantastic! I love that so much you don't even know. Also: For me, the 0.9.10 readme is up, but not the .ipa . Just in case something funky happened on your guys side, I wanted to let you know.

:)

I just forgot to put it in the Dropbox. Getting it in there now.
