Skritter with Nook Color

peanutbutter   April 25th, 2011 7:26p.m.

The Nook Color just updated today to provide Flash support for people like me who hadn't yet rooted the device. Skritter works great except the study page doesn't completely fill the screen. I know this came up in an earlier thread in March related to the Xoom and to the rooted and modified Nook Color. Just wondering if any solutions or workarounds came out of that. Thanks!

I have a generic Chinese tablet that wasn't filling the screen very well, but I found you can specify in the link manually that you wanted it to display in tablet mode it resized much bigger.

Try manually typing in this link and see what happens:

Thanks, that helps though it still fills only half or maybe two thirds. A really big improvement though. Thank you!

followtheflow   April 26th, 2011 1:32a.m.

Yeah I hope Nick can update it at some point.

Hmm, I haven't thought about using a Nook for Skritter. I had previously been waiting for the iphone application to come out but now I'm going to consider this - how do you guys like it so far if you don't mind me going off-topic?

followtheflow   April 26th, 2011 2:22p.m.

Well the experience still can't really be compared to the one you'd have on a laptop/computer with bamboo pen. I tried buying a pen for capacitive screen, but that wasn't really working for anything besides rough sketching. There's a small delay, you have occasional graphic bugs, and sometimes you can't erase the strokes completely and have to skip the character. Is it usable though? Absolutely.

More interesting however will be the HTC Flyer that actually comes with both touch and pen input and a faster CPU. Though it twice the cost for all I know...

peanutbutter   April 26th, 2011 4:29p.m.

Yep that sounds like what I've experienced as well.

peanutbutter, can you tell me what your user agent string is by visiting this site?

http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

We should be able to automatically activate the slightly larger layout; I'm guessing that the rooted vs. non-rooted Nook Colors have different User Agent strings, so that's why it's not picking it up.

I haven't implemented a full layout for that tablet resolution yet, so it still won't fill the whole screen.

Hi Nick, thanks for your help! The user agent is:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2.1; en-us; LogicPD Zoom2 Build/ERD79) Apple Webkit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1

I love Skritter and am looking forward to practicing even more on the Nook!

After some fiddling I was able to export one of my Skritter word lists into Pleco and set Pleco's flash card test mode to prompt English and have me write the character on my iPhone, so I got a "Skritter-like experience" on the go to reinforce my on-line Skrittering. I haven't yet figured out all the flash card settings in Pleco, so the SRS experience was not the same. I simply went through each card one by one, rather than getting "spaced repetition" of cards that I missed.

followtheflow   April 27th, 2011 12:45p.m.

Yeah I'm doing that as well with Anki. For Android you can download Ankidroid which is like Anki on your computer but even better because it allows you to write on a whiteboard, though it doesn't actually test your writing skills like Skritter. But it's good reading comprehension practice for when I am on the Metro and my internet is too weak to skritter.

I'll upload that user agent string soon, and then you shouldn't have to use the ?tablet=true URL any more.

peanutbutter   April 28th, 2011 2:04p.m.

Great, thanks so much!

followtheflow   April 29th, 2011 1:11a.m.

There's been a new update for Flash 10.2 and now Skritter seems to work without any graphic bugs and lags for me. Pretty happy now.

peanutbutter   May 5th, 2011 12:10p.m.

@followtheflow is that Flash 10.2 update only available if you're rooted? Sorry to turn this into a tech support forum.
