Looks like the Great Firewall or something like it is preventing you from completely loading www.skritter.com because it is hosted on Google App Engine, which is periodically blocked. Try instead our mirror:

legacy.skritter.cn

This might also be caused by an internet filter, such as SafeEyes. If you have such a filter installed, try adding appspot.com to the list of allowed domains.

Server slow?

hannes   March 8th, 2011 6:45a.m.

Hi,

Words are loading very slow at the moment, which is not ideal to keep up a good flow of words coming in. Are there any problems with the server?

Btw. a small suggestion how about having a dedicated box/ space on the website for technical issues. That way the forum does not get clogged up with these kind of posts.

I guess you could use the feedback button on the practice page if you don't want to post on the forum.

I'm also having some slow moments. Maybe it has something to do with the .com side being completely blocked in China at the moment?

susannekaiser   March 8th, 2011 6:57a.m.

It's very slow in Europe as well.

Google App Engine Python has been freaking out for a while, and we've been almost completely down. It's starting to come back up a little bit, but it's still prone to errors. We replaced skritter.com with a static error page for a while saying we were down, but left skritter.cn up.

Sorry guys! I'll add an extra day to the account of whoever posts in this thread as per our downtime policy. Hope to be going strong again soon.

esther   March 8th, 2011 8:33a.m.

Here Skritter.cn was also down for more than 1.5 hours.

scott   March 8th, 2011 9:23a.m.

Both domains point to the same server, so were (and still are unfortunately) affected by the downtime equally.

saudukargeneral   March 8th, 2011 9:32a.m.

Its coming back for me, working quite well

admiralbird   March 8th, 2011 9:50a.m.

Yes, both servers down for several hours this morning. Just now (9:45 EST U.S.) it is working. Yahooo here I go!

Last night, probs as well.

Judee   March 8th, 2011 9:57a.m.

woke up early this morning to do some cramming, but because of the downtime I made croissants instead. win-win. :)

scott   March 8th, 2011 10:01a.m.

The site has been completely stable for the last half an hour. Looks like the storm has passed. We will be on our toes at work today though! Okay now to get some real work done...

scott   March 8th, 2011 10:05a.m.

@Judee: It was the reverse for me. Woke up this morning to have a leisurely breakfast, instead ended up scrambling to figure out what was going on!

followtheflow   March 8th, 2011 11:03a.m.

Yeah it's been slow all day and I have been getting 500s all the time. Bit frustrating...

cr0atian   March 8th, 2011 11:04a.m.

It was working for the past hour but now on both .cn and .com I get Server Errors by clicking on Study or Study textbooks. I also had to reload multiple times to get to the forum so it looks like its not just affecting the study thing...

scott   March 8th, 2011 11:07a.m.

I spoke too soon. Yes, the server errors are site wide, for both .cn and .com. I got a message that these errors are still affecting a small percentage of apps, but we appear to be one of those apps.

jcdoss   March 8th, 2011 11:08a.m.

The server timeouts are becoming a real nuisance.

I wish we could download everything that's due and practice offline, then upload results at the end of a session. Not only could I practice on my more comfortable laptop at work (where I have no wifi access), but I wouldn't be booted off the server right when I get into the groove.

Possible? I know it's been requested before.

scott   March 8th, 2011 11:49a.m.

It's more realistic to work more on improving reliability by doing more optimization on the backend. While I don't think that would have helped in this instance, it would improve the majority of problems and slow downs we think. Building the Flash code to work offline, for example in conjunction with HTML5 features, would be very time consuming, as it would involve a fundamental overhaul of the code. The best chance of doing offline study is the upcoming iPhone app.

The Appengine team says the issue is completely resolved and will be sending out a public post-mortem. There have been no errors for the last 40 minutes. If errors start occurring again I'll contact them directly to investigate our app.

breakphreak   March 8th, 2011 11:58a.m.

Offline? huh... there is no thing like this in the modern world, is it? :)

chriscoboy1   March 8th, 2011 12:08p.m.

yea it is kinda slow....
