Chinese pod 问题

DaXia   February 26th, 2012 5:11a.m.

nick   February 26th, 2012 8:31a.m.

They've taken down the old version of the API and the new one isn't ready, so we're trying to get in touch with them about getting us back online with that:

swimming   March 1st, 2012 9:56a.m.

Did you get a response from the ChinesePod guys? Any estimate as to how long it would take to get the ChinesePod vocab lists running again?

scott   March 2nd, 2012 2:03p.m.

No response yet... I'll try contacting them again.

DaXia   March 3rd, 2012 9:52a.m.

Chinesepod的服务态度很令人失望。可惜没什么同业竞争者,不然我早就给抛了。

marchey   March 5th, 2012 10:24a.m.

I am also very disappointed by this situation. I hope it gets resolved soon!

Marc

scott   March 5th, 2012 1:50p.m.

I heard back from them; looks like the first email I tried sending to is no longer used. The original API was shut down because of a security issue. I'll be working with them on setting up a new API to get the data. We'll get this fixed as soon as we can!

icebear   March 5th, 2012 2:16p.m.

Thanks for the update Scott, it's good to know that "the wheels are in motion"!

scott   March 7th, 2012 1:43p.m.

While we're waiting, I've set up the lists and labels we already have cached on our servers to be available to people who were signed in when the API went down. Try it out on the beta site, and if there are no issues I'll push the update to stable in a couple days.

icebear   March 7th, 2012 1:58p.m.

That's working well for me, Scott - thanks for the temporary fix.

swimming   March 7th, 2012 2:26p.m.

I am glad things are rolling. Thanks!

I am trying to access the CPod list "Dinner with the Girlfriend's Parents", which I found by looking for "dinner", and I get the following error message on

http://beta.skritter.com/vocab/cpodlist?type=L&id=1879&page=19

The page isn't redirecting properly

Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.

I will be happy to supply more information. Let me know what you need.

"A Leggy Joke" and "Fresh Air vs. Heat" seem to be working fine.

scott   March 7th, 2012 4:46p.m.

That's a list we don't have cached. It was set up to continuously ping ChinesePod to get the list but that won't work! I've fixed it to display a message instead. Thanks for the bug report.

swimming   March 11th, 2012 1:38p.m.

How is it going with the API?

Is the beta site down at the moment? I can't get through to it.

scott   March 12th, 2012 1:47p.m.

I've pushed the changes to the stable site, so you can access cached ChinesePod lists from either. I haven't heard anything from them yet; I'll post here any updates I get though.

icebear   March 20th, 2012 10:09a.m.

Any further news here?

scott   March 20th, 2012 12:38p.m.

None so far. As soon as the API is available I'll get it hooked up as quickly as I can. I imagine they're as busy as we are, so you might want to contact them so they know how important is so it can be higher priority amongst everything they need to do.

icebear   March 21st, 2012 1:29p.m.

To anyone else hoping this is resolved soon, perhaps send a polite email to support@chinesepod.com ...

podster   March 21st, 2012 2:15p.m.

icebear,
done, thanks for the nudge on the e-mail campaign. CPod was just acquired by a foreign company, and I believe is also short staffed on the IT side, so it may well be that they are swamped. I wonder if they have stats on how many people access the content in their CPod accounts via Skritter. I would think it would be quite a few.

swimming   March 22nd, 2012 10:59p.m.

I just sent a message to support@chinesepod.com saying that I really hope that option of accessing vocab lists from skritter would work again soon.

marchey   March 31st, 2012 2:30p.m.

I feel this is taking far too long. For me the combo chinesepod + skritter has proven to be essential to make progress these last 2 years. Now that the link is broken I feel it hard to continue as before. Time to think and consider what is most important for me I guess.

bennyboyk   April 3rd, 2012 11:16p.m.

Any news? I'm finding this is really affecting my learning

podster   April 4th, 2012 6:11a.m.

marchey and bennyboyk, have you written to Chinese Pod, as icebear suggested above? I find they are pretty good about answering e-mail, if you want news. Also, it might help to let them know that more than a few people are missing this feature. Just be aware that it is not CPod's fault, though I share everyone's frustration at how slow the restoration has been.

marchey   April 4th, 2012 8:26a.m.

How do you know it is not CPod's fault? As far is I can tell from the exchange of e-mails I had with someone over there the problem with the skritter is interface is nowhere to be seen on their priority list. I am not even sure that they were (are) really aware of what the problem is before my e-mail. I get a bit annoyed with CP these last few months. Not the company it used to be anymore. As a long time client (I joined at the end of 2005) I have been disappointed many times about the way they handle things. Last in the row was a small annoying bug in their android app that surtfaced after an update. I got in a bug report, but they just did not fix it before the next release, meaning the I had to go through a few time consuming 'clicks) in order to hear the soundfiles for many months. In many other things too they have proven to be very obstinate and self centered. I think that I will not continue with them when the next renewal of my subsription comes up.

Can you please clarify where things stand at moment? Is there no ChinesePod API that you can hook to at the moment?

At some stage you mentioned, if I understood correctly, three versions of the ChinesePod API. The first and oldest version which is now dead. The second version, which may be up, and a third planned version. Is the second API up? Can you use it?

As many of us said, the Skritter+CP combination was really useful and it would be nice to have it back :-)

podster   April 4th, 2012 11:08p.m.

Marc,
I totally agree with most of your comments. I'm also a loyal customer, but frustrated that the technology aspects at CPod seem to be moving backwards. My point about it "not being CPod's fault" was based on the Skritter Team's acknowledgement that CPod had informed them a long time ago that the old API would eventually be taken down, and my e-mail reply from CPod mentioned the same. With the benefit of hindsight it would have been better if both parties had anticipated the problem and planned ahead. I share your suspicion that CPod is not very focused on resolving this issue, given the amount of time that it seemed to take for them to reply even to the Skriter Team (which I think would be a very high priority communication. CPod must have at least a few customers that they acquired or retained thanks to Skritter.)

nick   April 5th, 2012 9:04a.m.

There's definitely a communications problem somewhere--some emails are getting lost or something. We're trying other channels. All we need are the v2 API docs...

swimming   April 5th, 2012 9:12a.m.

Thanks for the clarification.

icebear   April 5th, 2012 10:39a.m.

Thanks for keeping at it Nick (and the rest of the team) - as others have said, it would be great to have this function fully running again - it definitely makes both services far more pleasant to use on a daily basis.

podster   April 5th, 2012 1:57p.m.

In a reply to my post on CPod yesterday I was advised that "the API should be ready by the end of the day." Don't ask me what "ready" means, and I'm really aghast that the lines of communication seem to be so poor. CPod is still putting out great lessons and other content. I think they recently moved office and also the company was recently sold, so that may be part of the problem.

scott   April 5th, 2012 5:52p.m.

That's great! As soon as I get it I'll pause work on iOS to get it hooked up as quickly as I can. And yes, I imagine there's a lot of flux going on over there, so we all appreciate your patience.
