2.6.1 update awaiting review (fixes missing characters)

nick   October 2nd, 2014 4:07a.m.

I've found the bug and submitted the fix for the missing characters in our iOS 8 update version, 2.6.0. It turns out that the problem only shows up on 32-bit devices. Apple broke a text sizing function on 32-bit devices, so text in several places throughout the app was being rendered with a font size of 0. Most significantly, reading, definition, and tone prompts don't show the prompts, and the word detail screen doesn't show the word.

I am not sure how long it will take to get the app update approved, but hopefully they can expedite it. In the meantime, you may still be able to do some study if you use Advanced Study and only do writing prompts, or if you'd like to try the HTML 5 version on your iOS device, or if you want to do the Flash version on your computer.

I'm sorry about this, guys. It's my fault; I should have tested on more devices for this update. Thanks for your patience.

Han82   October 2nd, 2014 9:11a.m.

It's ok. Apple broke a lot of apps with this iOS 8.

周浩轩   October 2nd, 2014 9:26a.m.

Great to see the fast turnaround! Congrats on finding the issue so quickly :)

Christian   October 2nd, 2014 10:29a.m.

Hi Nick, thanks for the quick update. However, I am running iOS 7 - so without that faulty 32 bit API - and am seeing the same behaviour (iPhone 4). Let's hope the bugfix works anyway :-).

salmoxis   October 2nd, 2014 11:10a.m.

Yes I am also having the same problem and am using iOS 7

Paredro   October 2nd, 2014 12:34p.m.

I have the same problem but I am using iPad mini with IOS 7

nick   October 2nd, 2014 12:49p.m.

It's not that the API broke in iOS 8, it's that the API broke when I turned on 64-bit support, which I had to do for a totally unrelated yak-shaving reason when upgrading to iOS 8. (Or perhaps it was the updated iOS SDK that this version was built with that broke that API.)

Seth Turner   October 2nd, 2014 6:12p.m.

good work!

susannekaiser   October 2nd, 2014 7:52p.m.

Hi Nick
Will you let us know once the fix is actually installed (published or whatever is the technical term for it)?
Thanks!

nick   October 2nd, 2014 9:12p.m.

Sure thing.

Christian   October 3rd, 2014 6:16a.m.

Thanks for the more detailed explanation for the development-minded Skritterers. Now you made me ponder how to sneak "for yak-shaving reasons" into the release notes of one of the software products I'm working on...?

thegiffman   October 4th, 2014 4:47a.m.

Nick, how long do these reviews normally take?

tausha   October 5th, 2014 3:53a.m.

Does the fix only address the missing characters or also the speed issue?

hellea   October 6th, 2014 7:53a.m.

Why did I update my apps yesterday? -_- Hope that it will be fixed soon. However, we still hear the pronounciation, that a "solution" for the moment.

nick   October 6th, 2014 11:19a.m.

They usually shoot for 5 business days, but they are behind, presumably because of iOS 8 still. So unless they expedite it, it might be the end of this week or beginning of next week.

I don't yet have a fix for the speed issues that others mentioned, which so far hasn't really shown up on any of the devices I've tested on. (Strange, given the bug reports.) I had to rewrite a lot of the graphics code for the iOS 8 update, so I'll need to find a device where it is actually slow, profile it, and implement the fix.

badfunkstripe   October 8th, 2014 1:46a.m.

Any update on this?

hellea   October 10th, 2014 4:23p.m.

Maybe the review is longer than expected :3

ErikHaze   October 11th, 2014 1:45p.m.

Hej Nick, it's almost two weeks now that we can't use the app. Also the update was uploaded 9 days ago. At the beginning I thought, it's nice to take a short break, but now... I think I forgot all characters I've ever learned :'-(

Any updates or are you waiting now for Apple? Is it normal that it takes 9 days?

Does the HTML version work? I tried going here on my iPad:

http://html5.skritter.com

but I can't get past login: it stays stuck with a "Logging in" message box.

hellea   October 12th, 2014 11:18a.m.

And I don't see the characters on the html version :(

nick   October 12th, 2014 3:57p.m.

Still waiting. Apple is breaking our hearts here again.

mcfarljw   October 12th, 2014 8:43p.m.

Unfortunately the html5 won't run on any iOS browser or device.

I had initially planned to support it but there were too many restrictions on JavaScript and HTML5. The biggest one being lack of IndexedDB and a buggy implementation of WebSQL past 4mb. I read that was supposedly taken care of in iOS 8, but from what I'm reading now it's described as having "seriously buggy behavior".

http://caniuse.com/#feat=indexeddb

I just pushed the latest html5 build live and had Jake try it out in hopes the "seriously buggy" bit wouldn't affect it, but we had the same results as Kai. Sorry about that, would have been really cool if it did magically work!

alexkid909   October 13th, 2014 1:46a.m.

Hello Guys,

any feedback on the fix its already a while....

Cheers
Alex

hellea   October 13th, 2014 9:12a.m.

I've been using the html version yesterday night (GMT+2) on my iphone. It worked. But it's not as good as the app version ;p. Last week, I began skritter on my pc. I'll carry on until the issue would be fixed.
Good luck guys :)

nick   October 14th, 2014 2:15p.m.

They finally approved it, so the Chinese 2.6.1 is in the App Store now (if you don't see it, wait up to an hour). Skritter Japanese should be following soon after.

周浩轩   October 14th, 2014 2:52p.m.

Downloaded, worked, much happiness!

aaez   October 14th, 2014 2:57p.m.

Whoop whoop :) On a first glance everything seems to be working fine! It's in the German App-Store! Thanks nick for the fast fix!! (Honestly, I blame Apple for their freakishly slow review process... Maybe consider calling it 123Skritter or ASkritter in the future..)

alexkid909   October 15th, 2014 2:19a.m.

Downloaded and and worked ... Great thanks a lot.

jblinguaphile   October 15th, 2014 12:17p.m.

Working great now. Thanks for the quick fix.

hellea   October 15th, 2014 3:52p.m.
