Show simplified form for reference

Is there a way to make Skritter show the simplified form along with the traditional form, but not ask me to write in simplified? I study traditional for writing, but of course want to be able to read simplified also, so it would be great if Skritter let me see them as I go.

Also, have you guys seen the iPhone version of the Pleco dictionary? Pretty sweet. Maybe you could license their full-screen handwriting recognition for a portable version of Skritter if your Flashy plans don't work out.

You can see the other form in the lookup menu (click the magnifying class). Is that sufficient?

You can also set your character style to "traditional and previously added simplified" and Skritter will start notifying you which characters have alternate forms.

I just downloaded the Pleco app this morning. Haven't checked out the paid components yet. Pleco's licensing its handwriting recognition from Hanwang, but I imagine if we were to do an app we'd want to use ours instead--the different algorithms better suit different purposes.

Anyone else use Pleco here and can comment on what you like about their new iPhone app?

The magnifying glass is okay, but it doesn't really fit into my rhythm when I'm blazing through the characters.

I like Pleco because:
- it has multiple official dictionaries (I especially like the Chinese-Chinese option)
- it has lots of cross referencing features (click characters to get popup definitions, see other words that contain a character, etc)
- its searching is flexible and fast

One thing I don't like is the busy UI. There are too many buttons and options.

I would be interested in this feature to subconsciously learn traditional characters. Would be a good idea and I don't think it would be too hard to add but I don't know. Should definitely be optional though

I agree with this as well.

For example, the pinyin practice hasn't been implemented yet but I still retain some of them based on it being in the corner of my eye.

We might try it. It would contribute to the disliked business you describe in Pleco's UI, though. I don't think you would get as much out of the passive traditional reinforcement as you do the pinyin--pinyin is really easy to process, eye-catching, and part of the main prompt, but passive traditional versions are none of these. Passive simplified might work a bit better, but the number of people studying traditional is small.

I would guess that you would have to actively look at the traditional versions to get anything out of them. I wonder if there is there a way to make the lookup menu fit the rhythm better.

For those studying traditional it might make sense as an option. It can sometimes be useful to know the difference between two (or more) traditional characters that have been simplified to the same one but generally learning simplified is hard enough already!
