Changing study settings in a finished list bug

范博涵   March 16th, 2012 6:33p.m.

I finished studying the individual NPCR characters of the first 9 chapters. I added chapter 10 to the list and then hit the Study button, but no words were added. I then tried "Change study settings" and "Add vocab from" and to my horror found out that while the words were added 0% of the list was learned. So I did another "Add vocab from" and selected ". Then it showed 271 characters and 0% learned. At that point I was worried that not only my progress of the past month had been lost but also that all of my stories might have been deleted. I opened Progress and the graph still showed that I had learned 217 characters. I clicked on Study and strangely enough one of the last characters I had studied yesterday was shown. I went back to the list editor and all of a sudden it showed 85.2% complete and chapter 10's 40 characters left.

Perhaps the addition of characters to finished lists can be made a little bit less heart attack inducing?

I've noticed similar in the past.

A (probably) related issue:
Recently I've been going through the new HSK lists to pick up the few odd words I haven't encountered elsewhere. The problem is I have already studied a majority of the words in the HSK1 and HSK2 lists, and when I set them to add automatically they malfunction after the no new words are found in the first sub-list. The list will then go into review mode, but when I click the "Restart adding" button they move into adding and back into reviewing mode immediately. The only way I've figure out around it is to change the settings for the list to add from a later sublist (where new words exist), although I'd prefer if it could just automatically cycle through the sublists on its own (instead of me opening every sublist to find a good candidate).

@约翰: What was happening there was when you set it to add from the beginning, the list went back to the beginning and started scanning through looking for words to add. That's why when you returned the progress was back up to 85.2%; it had finished scanning. Basically what you did 'resets' the list back to the beginning, however it doesn't change the status of the words you studied. This gives you control over where the list adds from. I'm not sure why the list didn't continue to add after you added that next section though. But if it gets stuck like that, it's better to set it to add again by going to the study nav and click 'restart adding'. Next time you see this though, let me know and I'll investigate to make sure there are no bugs.

I think I'll set it up later to say 'scanning' or something when you do that though, so it's less scary when that happens. So you know it's not going to stay at 0%. That will be later though.

@icebear: That appears to be your settings. Go here:

http://www.skritter.com/account/settings-study

And set 'section movement' to 'move to next section when complete'. Right now you have it stop after each section is complete. That's intended for people who want more control over when a list goes on to the next section, or want to make sure they keep pace with a class and not get ahead.

@scott: Thanks for the feedback. Everything is clear now. But yes, the app itself should have made this clear. When you click on something in any program and it performs an action as a result of that click, there is usually a progress bar, dialog box or other indication. When something goes wrong on the site, I would also like to see a guru meditation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guru_Meditation) instead of a dead tribble (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribble). 开玩笑。呵呵

@Scott

Will give that a try and see how it remedies the problem. An issue is that I would like stoping at the end of a section to be the default in several other lists (notably, the NPCR textbook)... although I guess its all or nothing?

@icebear: That's on my list of things to do post-iOS, but yes, right now it's all or nothing.
