"New words" that aren't new

junglegirl   July 4th, 2012 10:50a.m.

I've noticed that sometimes I get prompts that say they are for new words, when I'm sure I've studied the word before. This just happened with 倾销, and when I click on the magnifying glass it gives me stats indicating that the words has indeed been studied before (last studied two weeks ago, 50% success rate, etc.), but on the study page it still says new word. I think maybe this only happens on the website with words that I've previously studied on the app, but that's just a theory.

It might be something on beta. I've been moving much around and reorganizing, though not so much has changed with progress tracking.

It might also be that the item is new, not necessarily the word. Looks like you studied the tone for the first time today.

Hi Scott, I don't really think it's beta as I don't normally use the beta site. I switched to it briefly today to recalculate my stats, but I'm pretty sure that that's just a coincidence and that I've seen this behaviour before. This is just the first time I've bothered clicking on the magnifying glass to be sure. Also, I never study tones, so I don't really understand how my supposed progress on tones is calculated. The prompt I saw today that led me to post this was for the definition of 倾销.

Hmm, I can't reproduce this by studying on the app then the site. Also the data on the server shows nothing amiss. What other word/part combos has this happened for?

junglegirl   July 5th, 2012 5:02p.m.

I don't have any other examples now but I will keep an eye out and let you know.

Just got another one: 三十六计。I just had the pinyin and definition prompts, both of which claimed to be new. When I clicked the magnifying glass it said the definition was last studied 4 weeks ago. Can't say for sure about the pinyin because it showed it had just been studied 3 seconds before (I didn't think to check before I moved on to the next prompt), but I'm pretty sure I've done it before too.

And here are some more: 人手,爵士,不至于, 集团。

I've also run into this problem, but only on the app. Haven't been on the web page since I downloaded the app, but at times I get the little banner saying it's a new word/tone/definition when I know that I've already studied them. I'll try and eyeball them and actually make a list, but a bit strange.

Same here, but I always forget to write down which ones and check them on the web; I haven't discounted the possibility that I just never noticed the pattern of introducing new parts of words until you added that little message to the app!

I think I might have found a fix for this. We'll try it on the beta site soon. It would occur if you had tones turned off and had studied the readings on the app before, then studied the reading on the site.
