Items due have some major issue.

Sandeep   July 19th, 2012 3:13p.m.

The items due on the app and website never match even after syncing....
I have zero items due on app and some 330 in website.
What could be the issue?

scott   July 19th, 2012 5:14p.m.

Check my words. Do the items you just studied show up?

Sandeep   July 19th, 2012 9:44p.m.

I think this happens immediately after syncs.maybe the website or the app does some dirty read or something. Four hours back there was this huge mismatch and now in the morning the two numbers are app 358 and web 371.
I add a ton of words so scrolling through them will be a pain...
I can leve with a diff of 12 words from a group of 350.
Furthermore sometimes me items pending on the app goes down like 30 items after one item studied. I am wondering whether that should happen.

Thanks in anticipation.

Roland   July 20th, 2012 3:18a.m.

Sandeep, I've also encountered this, I believe, it's because of some problem with the sync. Once I shut down the app and restart it, then it syncs properly and both figures are very close to each other.

戴金霸   July 20th, 2012 5:32a.m.

Mine are never the same. iPad, iPhone and the web they are all different.

Sandeep   July 23rd, 2012 8:38a.m.

@Scott

Just out of curiosity why are they never the same??

The interesting part here is that you spend about 15 minutes more to check which number is correct. This adds some more time to "Total time spent learning".

lechuan   July 23rd, 2012 4:01p.m.

My numbers always seem to match immediately after Syncing.

However, I noticed that with just launching the app, but not doing any testing, the numbers due between the website and app seem to deviate over time. Are there perhaps some differences in the algorithms/timing that calculate when a character is overdue between the web and app versions?

Is it possible for Skritter always sync on launch and exit, irrelevant of the screen you're in?

scott   July 23rd, 2012 6:34p.m.

@Sandeep: the numbers 358 and 371 don't sound far enough apart to be a problem. Syncing happens in batches as you study, and then again whenever you return to the home screen. If it were to sync after every review it would suck the battery far too fast with all the networking going on. So there will usually be a difference. Or are you seeing these differences after having gone to the home screen of the Skritter app and seen the sync complete?

In terms of the words showing up in My Words, I was just wondering if, after a study session, those words you just worked on show up in My Words at all. If so, then syncing is going on.

The numbers going down in too large increments could be due to you not having all the data you need, and so some items are skipped. These issues have been dealt with for the next version. How often do you see it decreasing by 30? I made a copy of your account and tried it out to make sure nothing was wrong and I would get large steps down, but it was due to the fact that I went through large words which pushed back many characters that were also due. That happens when you have 'also add characters when adding words' on. A word that is 4 characters long has 20 items associated with it, four for each character and four for the word itself. When you study the word, most related items are pushed forward if they're due so that they don't happen in too quick succession.

@Roland: That's a bug I'm currently working on with beta testers. Still not sure what's causing it but closing in. And yes, forcing the app to restart fixes it.

@戴金霸: There's an issue with merging changes between multiple devices, where the results of the merge don't get back to the server immediately. That's probably what you're seeing.

@lechuan: I'm not sure exactly what you mean. The app, having access to all the data at once, will slowly crawl upward if you leave it on the study screen without doing anything as more items become due and are immediately added to the total. You'd need to refresh the website to get the latest number from the server.

iOS apps are severely limited in what they can do in the background. Instead of happening when you leave the app, they happen whenever you're using the app or when you go to the home screen.

Sandeep   July 31st, 2012 7:08a.m.

@Scott Thanks for all these updates. Just to inform my numbers today after sync:-

App 1169
Web 1384

When is the next version coming?

lechuan   August 1st, 2012 10:16a.m.

I also found that after syncing, if the numbers don't match, they app will catch up to the web count after you review the first flashcard.

radiator   August 1st, 2012 7:40p.m.

Quick question on study settings.

If I change my study setting on the iPhone (e.g., "Stop Adding", study "writing characters" only), do those changes take effect on the server as well such that my next web session will also reflect that?

I guess I'm asking more broadly if I change the study settings on the iPhone phone, will I have the same study set up when I go to my desktop and resume the study session?

nick   August 2nd, 2012 12:05p.m.

Sandeep, the next version is coming when I get off my butt and fix a couple more bugs so we can get a good submission into Apple's hands. So when? Not sure yet.

radiator, most settings are synced between the website and all your iOS devices, yes.
