Editing Definitions

shoun   August 22nd, 2012 2:20a.m.

Hello, I'm coming across the issue of words being defined erroneously or having unnatural definitions in English, e.g.
吟诗 - think tank??

There doesn't seem to be anyway to re-define a word or create a custom definition local to a user though is anyone else running into this?

Are there any plans for an occasional 'audit' of word definitions or allowing existing definitions to be edited by users.

@shaun, are you using the web/flash app, or the iOS app?

shoun, on the web version you can create a custom definition by clicking on it, and then typing in what you want. On the iOS app you have to click the definition (or the arrow beneath it) then click the pencil button to the right of the definition.

You can also choose to submit the correction to be reviewed, so others will benefit!

Is there a process for submitting corrections to be reviewed?

Thanks, I now see that it possible to modify pinyin and definitions. However, it seems that the old definition/pinyin is what is always displayed when viewing study lists.

It's only when you go into the modify window is the new definition is displayed though for some reason.

Also, it doesn't seem that the new definitions/pinyin are saved either. I'm using a Mac w/ Chrome and even after making changes to definition and "saving changes", when going back to the "edit list" view the old definition/pinyin is still there.

Have you been able to do this successfully?

You're clicking on the wrong thing at the moment which is why it isn't working, and why you're confused about submitting a correction. The bit you're trying to change the definition in is only for adding or removing words. The 'edit' there is misleading. What that edit means is 'type another word in place of the current one'.

To change the definition in the list editor you do it on the section page itself. You don't need to go into 'edit this section' - that is just for adding/removing words. Instead, as long as the section has some words, you just need to click on the characters for the word you want to change, after which a popup appears, in which you should click the pencil icon beside the definition. It'll be obvious then.

Ahh, that makes sense and seems to work. Thanks!!

If you think there's an error with a word that you feel should be corrected, click "feedback" in the lower right and there will be a pop-up where you can type in a message describing a problem with the character/word you are currently looking at.
