Lastest app update broke on Ios 8.0.2

emcgough   September 30th, 2014 10:45p.m.

I can write chars. But the app no longer display chars. Prompts for tone or words are blank. Chinese and Jspanese chars do not display

**edit**

iOS 8 has brought a lot of changes which has unfortunately caused the app to not function correctly on a lot of devices. Sorry about this! We're hard at work on the fix and hope to have an update available as soon as possible. In the meantime you could study via Advanced Study and only study writing prompts, or study on the web at: www.skritter.com/study. It's not the best workaround I know, but we hope to have this fixed expediently.

If you all could let us know which version of iOS 8 you are running (8.0.2 for instance), and whether the app is working corrrectly or not, it will help us track down the root of the problem. Sorry again!

By the way, can anyone tell me if they *are* able to see the characters properly on reading, definition, and tone prompts?

Apomixis   September 30th, 2014 11:31p.m.

On iPad Air, it seemed to work fine, except for character writing. Then it has very thin lines when I write, and then even thinner dotted lines when it is showing my completed character superimposed on the official answer. I did about 60 items and the writing was the only thing that looked odd.

Apomixis   September 30th, 2014 11:40p.m.

And when you are writing and make a long scribble that finally "explodes" you don't get the burst of color during the explosion. The sound of the explosion is still there though...just missing the color-pop!

yourman   October 1st, 2014 2:30a.m.

I am not able to see the characters on definition.

jblinguaphile   October 1st, 2014 8:32a.m.

@Jeremy: It looks like I'm using version 2.6.0. Is the update you mentioned a higher version than that?

[Also, I think it would be most equitable for y'all to extend our subscriptions for the lost day(s) of availability. Using the website is not an acceptable substitute for the app.]

ClNoHa   October 1st, 2014 9:43a.m.

Any news on when the app can be expected to work?

Apomixis   October 1st, 2014 10:20a.m.

After rebooting my iPad, the writing on Skritter is now behaving properly (including the colorful explosion at the end of a scribble!). So, for the IPad air, the app is behaving well for me.

EDIT: by reboot, I mean hold down the home button and top button until the Apple logo reappears after it shuts down, and only THEN let go of both buttons. I do not mean just shutting down regularly.

ClNoHa   October 1st, 2014 11:04a.m.

That does not work on iPhone

Yomar   October 1st, 2014 1:01p.m.

Rebooting does not fix anything on my iPad3 either.

hansw1204   October 1st, 2014 3:20p.m.

Works just fine on my system (iPad Air, iOS 8.0.2)

周浩轩   October 2nd, 2014 9:19a.m.

Broken on my account too. iPhone 5 with iOS 8.0.2. Can't see definitions, pinyin. Also, the app doesn't honour silent mode, so plays sounds via the speaker when it shouldn't.

A very frustrating update. Let me know if I can help testing any fixes.

Fix is awaiting review: http://www.skritter.com/forum/topic?id=2571653696

The change to play sounds independently of the mute switch was suggested by many users with audio problems with Skritter, so we're trying it out to see if it makes more sense this way. You do have access to the volume control within Skritter, plus the device master volume switches to quiet it in a pinch.

mengjiepeng   October 2nd, 2014 11:51p.m.

No troubles here, iphone 5s running iOS 8.0.2

But please consider making the app honour the mute button again. Having to go into the app's settings or re-adjusting the master volume multiple times a day, for study in different environments (home, office, metro, etc.), is much more annoying than flicking the mute button on/off. I've been using the app since the beta in 2012, on multiple devices, and never had audio issues. Until now...

周浩轩   October 6th, 2014 1:16a.m.

+1 on the mute button. If you *must* enable sounds while on mute, please make it an option, or at least provide an option to enable to the previous behavior.

I typically use Skritter in the following situations:
1. while on commute - on mute, with audio via headphones, while listening to music or podcasts
2. while watching tv with my family - on mute, with no sound
3. in a cafe or at lunch - on mute, with no sound
4. by myself at home (rare) - not on mute, with sound

Being able to use the mute button to change for these circumstances is important. Using the volume buttons is not an option, as I also use the muted state for my alarm, and run the risk of forgetting to put the sound up again.

tcp7   October 9th, 2014 8:15p.m.

Please let us know when you have solved this problem. I have an iPhone 4S and for me, the characters and pronunciation started not being displayed even before I updated to 8.0.2. I thought updating it would fix it but it didn't.

Also, if this does take much longer, then I agree with jblinguaphile in that an extention for the number of missed days on our subscription is in order. I never use the browser version for actual study, only for adding words.

Thank you! Good luck!

Still awaiting review. We're happy to extend any subscriptions due to missed time–I'm really sorry about the problem–but we can't do it if you are paying through Apple, unless you unsubscribe through Apple and resubscribe through the website. Then we can offer you a discount and some free time to help make up for the troubles. Just shoot us a feedback message through the site if you haven't been able to study and we will sort it out.
