why do I learn more than what I add?

papierjaune   February 10th, 2013 8:06a.m.

Sorry if this has been addressed elsewhere but I couldn't find the answer.
How is it possible that I've learned more characters (656) than what I've added (575). The same applies to all other prompts...

learninglife   February 10th, 2013 8:19a.m.

altogether (from the beginning) you have added more than 575 i guess.

papierjaune   February 10th, 2013 8:31a.m.

@learninglife j.h. : I guess so, but why this discrepancy? these values are the total values, from the beginning until now. Do your values match?

learninglife   February 10th, 2013 8:33a.m.

if its from the beginning till now its really strange.

i never look at my values except the big total at the end of the day ...

another possibility is that the system splits words (consisting of two or more characters) into two or more single characters.

Laspimon   February 10th, 2013 11:16a.m.

If you have studied compounds without adding each individual character, you can learn the characters without adding them to My words.

papierjaune   February 10th, 2013 10:34p.m.

@Laspimon : so even if I enable the "Characters in Words" feature, individual characters of a word won't be taken into account statistically?

Laspimon   February 11th, 2013 9:20a.m.

If you have had it activated from the very beginning, all the individual characters should also have been added. Perhaps you did not enable it when you first started?

papierjaune   February 11th, 2013 9:33a.m.

@Laspimon: thanks for your help

Byzanti   February 11th, 2013 10:07a.m.

Two new characters in a new word will increase your character count by 2 and word count by 1.

夏普本   February 11th, 2013 11:36a.m.

Not really the same problem, but for some reason my characters data shows 1572 writings and 1696 readings, I expect a small difference, but 124 seems quite high, don't know why I am not being tested on these writings.

It might also be a calculation error. I do from time to time recalculate my stats since they over time do get more and more odd. In my case probably since I do use multiple devices to study on. You can give it a try at the beta site. Go to "progress" then "Totals" and on the bottom at the popup you have a text link to recalculate. In my last run i had some 10% discrepancy there. You will get a mail afterward telling you how large the difference where and what the new stats are.

papierjaune   February 13th, 2013 3:42a.m.

@Mandarinboy2 : it makes more sense now, thanks

夏普本   February 13th, 2013 5:43a.m.

Thanks, seems like it was over estimating my characters learned by more than a 100, little depressing.
