Looks like the Great Firewall or something like it is preventing you from completely loading www.skritter.com because it is hosted on Google App Engine, which is periodically blocked. Try instead our mirror:

legacy.skritter.cn

This might also be caused by an internet filter, such as SafeEyes. If you have such a filter installed, try adding appspot.com to the list of allowed domains.

What study techniques do you use as part of your self learning?

Conversation practice is the number one most effective technique. If that's not available, Anki plus Skritter.

Since I'm in NYC and don't much like online chats, I mostly use the latter.

I guess the best would be reading. Speaking practice is obviously a must, but if it is unavailable, reading gives you access to lots and lots of grammar and vocab. Of course Chinese.... I try to do it more often but my level is too low to read anything interesting and it bores the shit out of me.
