I've just wasted, it seems, a whole lot of time adding words to my "misc" cards, i.e. non-textbook cards, from a book which I really need to return to the library! :(

Is it just me, or is the "add words" feature on the iOS/iPhone 4S not working at the moment?

I should have given up much sooner, the percentage done figure wasn't moving at all.

Uh oh--something strange is happening with your Quick Add. It seems to have added each word to its own multi-section list, all named misc, each with one section and one word. You can see the disaster here:
