Japanese

Having used this system for a few days now, I was wondering how you're going to adapt it for Japanese.

Obviously, Japanese characters don't have tones (well, not in the same way) but they do have loads more readings than Chinese characters -- as many as 20 in the case of δΈ‹, if you include names. How do you plan to address that? It's really not something that can be drilled outside of the context of words, in my experience.

But I'm sure the basic theory can be applied, so go on, spill the beans! What'll the Japanese one be like?

Japanese is still very much in the planning stages, so there isn't a whole lot to say about it for certain, except that it's definitely going to happen. We've been doing some research and planning, and so far what we have in mind is similar to Chinese, but with the emphasis on learning in the context of the words (and eventually sentences). For Chinese, we eventually plan to have practice for not only character and tone, but also pinyin and definition, both at the character level and the word level. For Japanese, however, studying reading and definition will only be done within the context of words. Practicing writing the characters will still be done individually as well as in the context of words, to give it some extra focus.

That's the gist of what we're thinking in terms of Japanese. Of course, it's very much open to changes. It will be a little while before we get to building it; first we need to get the Chinese side of Skritter humming smoothly. But I'm studying Japanese and really want to use Skritter with my studies as soon as possible, so I'll be making sure we get to it when we can!

On that note, I'm off to study some Japanese.
