android screen size

YueMeigui   August 24th, 2011 12:46p.m.

With my backlog up over 6000 items I went looking at my progress charts and realized that I'd gone from an average of 30 - 60 minutes a day per month to 11 hours in July and a current total of 2.5 hours for August.

"What happened?" I thought to myself.

I know I cancelled my subscription while intending to temporarily work down my (huge) backlog of 1000+ words but I've cancelled my subscription before and managed to keep my numbers relatively high.

(I had dumped a large amount of my queue into my active word list prior to cancelling my subscription but later thought on the matter says this is not an especially sensible way to go about pinching pennies.)

And then I realized I'm not skrittering on my phone anymore.

For a while now, when I load Skritter's study window on my HTC Desire instead of getting a character drawing prompt that covers the whole screen I instead get a tiny study window (about 65% the screen size) with a large border on the left, right, and bottom of the screen.

SOMETIMES I can resize this by tapping, other times I have to specifically pinch zoom. Once I am resized I have to tap on the flash window multiple times to get it to notice I want to write (and am not resizing) now.

Then, when I'm writing, it periodically resizes itself without warning or obvious reason.

Once it has randomly resized, frequently the only way to size it back up again is by pinch zoom and it then takes multiple taps on the active surface to convince my phone that I want to do something in the active surface and am not, in fact, moving to another part of the screen.

This is seriously annoying.

So annoying, in fact, that I basically stopped skittering altogether.

I also notice (As I write this message on my laptop I'm trying to skritter on my phone) that character animations have gone slow as molasses and are freezing up a lot.

Will we see a fix any time soon?

It started doing that a long time ago, and I love it. For me it makes writing much easier (and faster) and more to scale, and is easier on my eyes. If it gets changed back, will it be possible to have a method to keep it that way?

YueMeigui   August 24th, 2011 1:21p.m.

about two months ago in fact or around the time that I stopped skrittering

This happens on my htc incredible as well - real annoying. You can fix it on my phone by double tapping the writing area BEFORE selecting it (making it active). I find that after doing this it does not resize.

YueMeigui   August 25th, 2011 9:54a.m.

I do double tap my screen.

There is no rhyme or reason to the screen resizing itself when I'm in the middle of skrittering.

I really miss the old way where it initially came up the same size as the whole screen.

So before, I had coded it such that we'd try to predict your device width properly and serve a page zoomed to fit that width, disallowing zooming so that the page wouldn't drag around accidentally. But as more devices came online and our detection code couldn't keep up, I had to allow user zooming so that these devices could at least manually size to the right width.

The problem is that when you allow manual zooming at all, a lot of devices then ignore the initial zoom settings, so even the devices which were detected properly now don't get the perfect fit by default any more. Which is very disappointing, I know.

I've gotten some updates made to our detection code, so one thing I could try doing is disallowing user zooming again to see if we can do well enough without it. I will try that sometime next week.

As far as freezing issues: I haven't reproduced it yet, but we'll be doing some more extensive testing soon, and I hope to find the cause of the issue.

Thanks for your patience, guys.

When it gets fixed, would it be possible to force the zoom smaller?
For me personally it makes more sense to be scaled down the way that it is, and although its not supposed to function that way in the first place, I'll be slightly disappointed when its back to forced full screen,

It makes it faster to write, because the characters both smaller, and the flash window is as well, and isn't all giant and huge like im 5... lol.

YueMeigui   August 30th, 2011 4:23a.m.

I decided I'd bite the bullet and try skrittering on my phone just now. Laptop window is open and skrittering no particular problem. Phone can't even get through a whole character without stalling.

It worked fine before.

I've just uploaded the zooming change. g1itch, to override it, for now you can add ?zooming=true to the end of the URL, until I figure out whether to keep it this way.

I haven't yet debugged the hanging issue yet, but I'll try to solve that soon, Yue Meigui.

awesome that works for me thanks nick :)

※on a samsung galaxy s, the new zooming change is a little too small still
