Couple of requests

jww1066   November 19th, 2009 12:25a.m.

I have a couple of items to add to the feature request list.

1. The "queue" page's "Browse" tab doesn't show you how many items total you have in the queue; you currently have to click "Next" over and over to see how many there are. Can you please add the total count? The ability to jump to a specific page rather than having to repeatedly click "Next" would also be nice.

2. There doesn't seem to be any way to reorder the items in the queue.

3. The "Custom Lists" page now only shows a small number of custom lists at a time. This is arguably worse than the previous situation, where at least people had an idea of what custom lists were available; now they have to click repeatedly to see all the lists, which I doubt most people will do. As evidence, see the recent forum thread asking for a list based on a list of the 3000 most frequent characters when we already have something like six such lists. Any progress on allowing us to search and sort the list of custom lists?

4. Another usability issue: the "Custom Lists" table column headings ("Add From", "List", etc.) shouldn't scroll out of sight when you scroll down in the list.

Here's another one: When editing a large custom list, everything slows down a lot for me. Would it be possible to have sections minimized by default (i.e. not displaying the words)?

I'm expecting perfection, too. Hurry up, guys! Much ado about everything is remaining ahead!

I hear they'll do an overhaul of the queue page at some point.

I'm looking forward to an export button straight from the queue as well.

No rush Skritter dudes. Skritter is still awesome.

another voice saying thanks for Skritter...

and another (small I think) request: It is great that I can now link directly to a dictionary, even more efficient would be if Skritter remembered what my favorite one is. Since I am in the minority who prefers Yellowbridge, I have to click and scroll down to that choice each time. Small effort on my part, I know, but I think a small change on your part - and it doesn't have to be in my profile, remembering for each session would be good.

Let's see...

Queue Total: Sure I can add that. It's going to be a different number than you get by going forward... That's because the queue groups items from the same word together when you're browsing, but the count that I can do only counts them individually, so the number will end up higher. Going to have to figure out a way to adjust the numbers so it isn't confusing...

Queue Reordering: Mmmm, nope not for now. I'm currently playing around with the idea of having more things structured as the standard vocab list in the backend, things like the cram lists, the queue, and eventually the starred words list. This will allow you to reorder a list like you would be able to reorder a custom list. Part of this strategy would involve making the custom list editor much better than it currently is! But then there would only be one standard way to organize all these different kinds of lists.

Custom list organizing: I've been working on a google custom search for the custom lists, like the one we have for the forum, but I can't for the life of me get it to index the lists. I'm just going to start indexing them manually because we need these. They're actually in the html in the custom list page, just hidden until I can get them to work. Unfortunately, google custom search tech support's a little lacking when you're not paying to use their service...

The tagging system is another way we'll be getting those lists more organized. I don't imagine that will get implemented in the very near future though, I'm hoping the custom list search will cover most people's needs for the time being! I'll redouble my efforts to get the search done.

Custom list header: easy fix, will fix.

Custom list builder is slow: Yep! I'm making big textbook lists, and I've switched to using my desktop quad core on chrome for making those, because it's just too slow on firefox on my laptop. So I feel your pain. That and the custom list builder in general is an unintuitive system, so that's already on the list to be rebuilt from the ground up. That's a big project, but also fairly high priority, so it's only a matter of time. I'll see if I can hack it though so that sections can be hidden. That would be an interim solution at lesat.

Dictionary pref saving: Already built and live! And I just tested it on Firefox; hasn't been broken. I'm guessing it's another one of those pesky IE8 bugs. Sarac, you are officially our IE8 debugger.

We'll get to perfection some day! Thanks for your guys' support and patience.

@loupdessteppes: Hope I didn't come off as too demanding. I've posted plenty of positive feedback in the past. :) I had just been working with the queue page and so had a number of items burning in my mind.

@scott: Thanks for the quick response. The queue total and the custom list organizing are both much more important than queue reordering in my book. My biggest annoyance is the queue total; it doesn't matter to me if the number's not completely exact.

Scott:
On IE8 it not only doesn't remember my preference but also opens a second IE rather than a tab. (at least it sticks with one extra, not another and another...) Now on this computer we're solely using Chrome and that's where I first noted this. Sorry to add another "pesky bug" to your list. I do use the dictionary lookup often since finding words is especially helpful when I am learning a completely new character; I find I need to have something to hang it on.

No worries sarac! Thanks for being patient with those pesky bugs and letting us know about them. I'll make sure the dictionary saving and opening works on all browsers in the very near future.

@scott - Sorry for the belated response, but I just saw the queue total and remembered that I forgot to say "thank you", so, thank you. It's a big help. The search feature for the custom lists is also much appreciated.

Now I just have to deal with the fact that my queue has over 600 items... ;)
