"Advanced Study Mode" query - iPhone App

musoboy78   September 15th, 2013 7:33a.m.

Alrighty, I've Googled, grinded, and given up trying to find the answer to these 2 questions!! So I'm resorting to an annoying forum post, forgive me if the answer is obvious, but I can't figure it out...! :/

When I use the iPhone app to 'Advanced Study' any of my lists, I get a one-time (if that) run through the selected list, before this message flashes up:

'No Words To Study. You need to add words to study , but you can't add in review only Advanced Study Mode'...

And then it throws me straight out and back into the main Skritter menu.

I have no idea what's going on here, all I would like to do is loop around continuously the words in the chosen list for extra practice, and not just a one time run through...! And I'm not

Could any Skritterer help me out with how I could possibly fix this?!

And a second question, on the web Skritter, in list "Study Mode Settings", the top ones are labelled:

"Add: Add more words while you practice

Review: Just study words that have already been added"

What exactly does this mean, and does it also affect the behaviour of the sync'd iPhone app?

Thanks all for any help you can offer!

Haha! Who are the "Skritter Police"?

Sorry about that bug! I've fixed it in the latest update I sent to the App Store, which we're just waiting on App Review for.

The temporary part study mode settings on the web don't affect the iOS app. They do share the permanent part settings, which are found in the account - vocab settings in each.

Also, on the iPhone I don't have as many words ready for review as on the web. Currently it's 43 on the phone and 153 on the web (23 lists). This is even I have selected all the lists in advanced study mode (23 lists). I do have a few lists on the web, from which I have stopped adding (From a total of 23 lists), since I don't want to add more characters from those at the moment. It does feel as though I am missing a bunch of words for review on the iPhone, and it's not very convenient if I have to use both computer and phone for review. Other than that, thank you for a great study tool!

Halfdan, have you tried a Clear Local Data? It sounds like things might have gotten out of sync at some point, but doing a clean sync might realign things between iOS and web. (There are still a few cases where things will get out of sync again that we still haven't fully resolved, but it should stay pretty close most of the time.)

Thanks for that info Nick, I'll hold out until the iPolice approve the update... :)

Excellent learning resource, by the way...! A combination of this, and Memrise has really helped me with self-study.

Would love to see some way to visually check out the character without being penalised in retention/error scores. And also a 'x3' button, or something like that, so when the characters come up that are complex or I'm a little shady on, I can repeat them 3 x in a row - without having to wait for them to randomly appear again. Just a thought, but otherwise it's been kicking butt since I got stuck into it! Thanks again!

Clearing local data has helped, thanks. However, I now see that it's every time I use the advanced study it gets out of sync. I cleared the data and tried advanced study mode a few times today and it happened every time. From having 200 words for review it went to zero, because the specific list I studies in advanced study mode had zero for review. I know how to get around it now, but I hope this might help you guys in fixing it at some point. Thanks again!

musoboy78, you could tap to show and then toggle correct to see the character? I don't think we'd add a x3 button, but the swipe-to-erase shouldn't be that fiendish, either?

Hmm--I think the iOS update might help with that too, Halfdan, since we fixed a bug with the specific list study there. Let me know if you still see the problem after the update.

Yeah, I'm just being lazy...! ;)

FYI, another possible bug you may not be aware of... I listen to tunes in the standard 'Music' app, whilst Skittering. When I tried to adjust the Skritter volume tonight from Max. down to 90%, the volume went really quiet on Skritter, and wouldn't go back up again. Might have to do another 'clear local data' to fix it...

Clear Local Data shouldn't affect the volume setting. I'm not exactly sure what's happening there--I've seen inconsistent volume behaviors, but haven't been able to track down just what iOS is doing there. If you adjust any volume setting, it actually does all it can to reset every audio setting the app has access to.
