250px canvas better for handwriting?

葛修远   March 24th, 2011 1:28p.m.

Hey. Does anyone reckon using the smaller 250px canvas option might be better for handwriting?
I use a Wacom + raw squigs, but it's still a bit different to writing on paper as the movements for Skritter are so much larger. Do you think it would make a difference if I used the smaller canvas?

I guess it depends on your screen resolution v wacom size! My monitor/res is pretty small so I prefer the smaller one.

I think it's probably just a matter of comfort though.

I prefer the larger one actually. I don't like writing my characters so small, and I find that the bigger movements help out with getting muscle memory.

What about getting an old Tablet PC? I got a Toshiba m200, I just have to reinstall Windows onto it, but can't yet as I don't have an external DVD drive. They should be cheap on ebay.

I like the smaller one too. It feels unnatural for me to wave my hands around like I have to with the bigger onem even considering my high resolution. I can never get radicals like 門 to look good when I have to put so much arm into it.

Also here's a pro tip: You can make it even smaller/bigger by just using ctrl + mouse wheel or ctrl + (-/+) in most browsers. You'll have to click outside of the Flash Applet first though.

My desktop's screens are huge, and so when I write with my Wacom, I get a tiny, tiny little square corresponding to the Skritter writing area. I prefer it to the much larger writing area I get when I use my laptop. If I want to write very accurately, though, instead of quickly, then the larger canvas makes it easier. I don't notice much difference in terms of learning.

I just made the writing area on on the Wacom pad reflect a much larger area than I was actually writing. So I would write at a small normal size and it would match the larger Skritter writing area.

Mskritter, do you think an old tablet PC will run Flash / Skritter nicely? I sometimes use a fairly new Eee PC for Skritter and it's noticeably jumpy.

I'm waiting to for the HTC Flyer tablet to come out so I can test drive it. (Has a capacitive touch screen like other tablets, but a digitizer on top of that so that it works with a stylus.)

I just now installed Internet Explorer 9 and tried Skritter on it. Very nice, and I would say at least as smooth as Chrome. But I have a quite new PC running Windows 7.

I was drooling over the HTC Flyer yesterday. Going to be about £650 in the UK apparently, so I don't think it's worth it yet. HTC is going to bring out a cheaper wifi-only version later, so I might have a look at that. It does sound perfect for Skritter though.

The maker of the Eee PC is coming out with a tablet, which I am guessing will be priced at the lower end.
