Non-English source language bug

kawota   April 3rd, 2014 12:52p.m.

I told my friend about Skritter when he expressed desire to learn Japanese, so he subscribed. He doesn't speak English, but I agreed to help him with the words without Russian translation.

He's currently doing RTK in the HTML 5 version, and there is a problem:

When the program wants him to write a kanji or pronounce a word, the definition is shown in English, despite the fact we switched the source language to Russian.

We hope this bug will be fixed ASAP, as he basically cannot study like this.

If you switch your language settings to another language like Russian, but then come across a word that doesn't (yet) have a definition in Russian, it will default to English, (you could edit these definitions if you would like translating them and then submit them as a "correction").

kawota   April 3rd, 2014 3:31p.m.

Yes, I know, and we did edit the definitions. When you are supposed to remember a definition, the program shows the Russian word as the answer.
But when it asks to write a character or pronounce a word, the prompt line with the translation is in English.

Example:
The program shows 友達, and you are supposed to recall the translation. You tap on the screen and it shows "друг" - Russian for "friend". No problem here.
But when Skritter wants you to write 友達, the prompt line with the definition say "friend" - in English, not in Russian.

kawota, have a look at my words (web-app), custom definitions. If the word is still there, then its a bug. If it isn't there, then it was already accepted and taken over as a standard definition. In this case it takes about 2 days, before the new definition appears on the iOS version (and I would assume the same on the HTML version). During these 2 days, Skritter falls back to the old Standard Definition = English, as you're custom definition is deleted immediately, but the update comes only 2 days later.
I did a lot of translations for the German version (Chinese). To avoid this, I first looked up the vocabulary list in the web-app, translated everything, accepted it in Baller and only then added the vocab on my iPad. Then it is immediately available.

The HTML 5 version probably just has this a bug, I'm guessing. I've started tracking it over here: https://github.com/mcfarljw/skritter-html5/issues/177

kawota   April 4th, 2014 2:52p.m.

Thanks!
Any idea on how long it will take to fix it? My friend's considering "going on a vacation" to save subscription time.

mcfarljw   April 4th, 2014 6:26p.m.

@kawoto, thanks for the report. It sounds like the vocabs aren't getting updated with the new custom definitions on the html5. You could try logging out and logging back into the html5 to for it to refresh the vocabs.

Would you mind letting me know his Skritter username? I'll load his account up and debug it using that account so I can be 100% sure when I've fixed it. Thanks!

kawota   April 5th, 2014 1:53a.m.

@josh, his username is pacha
Thank you for the quick reply.
Again, how long will it take? Should he take a week off?

mcfarljw   April 5th, 2014 9:29a.m.

Thanks for letting me know the username, that'll help me fix the issue faster. It'll probably take around a week, because I'll be getting situated in an apartment over the next few days. I'll let you know when I've resolved it.

kawota   May 6th, 2014 3:15a.m.

@josh, any news on the issue? My friend says it is still not solved.

mcfarljw   May 6th, 2014 8:51p.m.

Hey kawota, I made a few adjusted some things but it still sounds like it's not working. We're really pushing to release a much improved version of the html asap that is largely a coding rewrite of the current version. Can you shoot me an email at josh@skritter.com? I'll see if I can get a special workaround going for your friend. Let me know what kind of Android device he has.
