Dreaming in Chinese/Japanese

icecream   November 23rd, 2011 6:48p.m.

I had a dream last night in Japanese. It was interesting as my brain was trying to extrapolate sentence structures that I learned that day into new patterns. Needless to say, I did not understand much of what was being said. Anybody else dream in multiple languages?

I'm pretty sure I've dreamt in English as well as my mother tongue German, but my dreams are generally not very vocal or at least I don't remember much.

My boyfriend can testify though that I've talked in English in my sleep.

I've heard people say this before, but didn't really believe it could over power my native language in a dream. After living in China and speaking Chinese in daily life I can recall a few dreams where I was speaking a little Chinese.

The only thing I remember about them is they were me switching to Chinese to prove a point that apparently I wasn't explaining well enough in English.

When I dream in Chinese, I'm always really awesome at it, much moreso than I actually am. I like those dreams.

When George dreams in Chinese, it's always him not understanding a single word. http://blog.skritter.com/2009/06/crazy-chinese-dream.html

I once asked somebody in a dream, 你好, 你是從那一個地方來美國的? But that's about it.

I dream in Japanese quite a bit. Sometimes I can actually remember the conversations when I get up. The interesting part is that other times, I don't understand stuff. But, how is that possible if it's being generated by my own brain? O.o

SkritterJake   November 24th, 2011 3:26a.m.

I still remember the first dream I had in Chinese. I had been studying Chinese for a semester and a half and was participating in a statewide speech contest the following day. That night my dream consisted of me totally forgetting my speech (a memorized two minute talk about my busy Mondays) and instead talking in detail about the complexity of the Chinese language. I woke up vowing that someday I would actually be able to give a speech like that... I don't think I'm there yet.

These days dreaming in Chinese is pretty common. Especially on days when I use Chinese more than English.

atdlouis   November 24th, 2011 3:54a.m.

I've studied four languages (German, Spanish, Nepali, Chinese), and I've had dreams in all of them.

The dreams are pretty much the same. Someone will tell me something, and I will have to think, what did they just say? After that, I have to think about what I want to say, and then say it. Even when I have achieved fluency and no longer have to translate in my head, the dreams happen this way.

oh geez now i come to think of it i havent woken up remembering a dream for many months now, hmmm... maybe my head is waiting for my Chinese to improve big time.

Did any of you wake up thinking you forgot your mother language?:)

DavidChung   November 24th, 2011 8:30a.m.

When I dream about people/situations where I'd normally use Chinese, it's in Chinese.

If I dream about people/situations where I'd normally use English, it's in English.

Haven't had one where a non-Chinese speaker suddenly starts talking in Chinese with me yet...

mcfarljw   November 24th, 2011 12:06p.m.

@atdlouis, How many languages do you have to know before dreaming in them all becomes a nightmare? :P

atdlouis   November 25th, 2011 8:28p.m.

Ha, I've had enough nightmares about just one language - Chinese :)
