Items due across devices

atanner   October 16th, 2014 1:00a.m.

I use skritter on iPad, Android and iPhone. When setting up iPhone, I noticed that other apps (and website) list hundreds of items that are due.

For some reason the list of items due hasn't made it's way to my iPhone app. This client just started adding new words fr my list. Very rarely it reviews older items.

How to get my items due to iPhone?

iPhone 5S, iOS 8.0.2

I'm having the same issue with my Android app vs. the website. Reviews are totally out of sync.

You guys using an eventually consistent database or something? :)

I can't comment too much on the due count being out of sync on iOS, but I do know both of our mobile apps handle things slightly different than the website. This is largely due to the fact the mobile apps download a copy of all your data so that offline mode is possible. If you're switching between devices frequently it's a good idea to sync button before starting your study session.

@willwilson, If you haven't logged out in awhile and have upgraded the app a few times it might help to "refresh" the local data. You can do this by navigating to the account page (on Android) and at the bottom you can select "Download All Data". This essentially downloads and stores everything from the server again.

While studying on Android the due count probably won't match the website. With the latest version the number of reviews should actually be a bit higher on Android. If you return to the dashboard and press the sync button twice things should line up to match the server.

I have been having this problem for a long time with my iPod Touch. I study only using the iPod, and every couple of weeks I'll look at the web site, notice it's hundreds of items off, and do a full sync by deleting local data and logging in again. It's really annoying, as it requires a long time to sync everything, and it makes me wonder what items are being skipped that I should really be studying.

I have the same issue on an Android Nexus 5. Tells me I have 0 items due while the web tells me I have (currently) almost 200. I've downloaded all data and synced over an over. Sometimes it will refresh, but most of the time it does not.

mcfarljw   October 17th, 2014 2:43p.m.

@ChadlyP, well it's certainly something that I want track down and improve (or ideally perfect). The due count is a locally calculated value and isn't loaded directly from the server. Two questions just to help me figure out possible ways to reproduce the issue.

Do you have any filters turned on/off (ie. not studying definition prompts)?

Have you done a download all running the latest version 0.66.2307?

ChadlyP   October 17th, 2014 2:49p.m.

Thanks, Josh. This was my mistake. I found on another forum post that I needed to manually add new items. Did this change in the latest update? I don't remember having to do so before. Thanks again!

mcfarljw   October 17th, 2014 2:55p.m.

Yep, right now the Android app only supports manual adding. In the latest update I did add the option to choose from fixed quantities in increments of 1, 5, 10 or 20. I'm still working on getting auto adding to work properly. I haven't released it yet because in some internal testing it's been going a bit crazy and adding way too many items.

ChadlyP   October 17th, 2014 2:59p.m.

Yes, I noticed the incremental additions option. Interesting thing, however, is I selected the 20 option, and it added 153:-/

mcfarljw   October 17th, 2014 3:04p.m.

The reason the number of items due has increased significantly compared to the number 20 you selected is a combination of each item has 4 parts (definition, reading, tone, writing) and you have enabled to include contained characters. So if you add 20 vocabs you're actually adding 80 new prompts and that gets even bigger if those vocabs have contained characters.

Yikes... Really? This is an expensive app... I just dropped$100 on a new (different) id for my android device.. And it's not fundamentally consistent across platforms? Maybe you could at least give us a little heads-up list of stuff that doesn't actually work (like, I've been working for a really long time doing only a few characters over and over, waiting for some new characters ... Which never are coming, according to this post....) Jeez.

mcfarljw   October 18th, 2014 11:10p.m.

Hey jmt, if word adding is turned on iOS and the website should add new things when your due count gets low enough. You can add stuff through the Android app, but right now you'll need to use the plus+ button at the top. You can also use the plus+ button from the other two apps to add items at anytime as well.

Can you provide a bit more information as to which platform you're running into problems with?
