New Features - A Wishlist ...

ricksh   August 27th, 2013 9:16a.m.

Has been some great additions to skritter functions recently, but after a few long sessions, here’s a “wishlist” of new features roughly in priority order

1- Link to web from IOS for word/character lookup
2- When have searched for a forgotten word through “My Words” should be able to mark it as forgotten (i.e. shouldn’t have to wait until next due before start it afresh through SRS)
3- Indicate if a word is HSK 1/2/3/4/5/6 [could go by current “Easy/Hard/Unknown/etc.” level in the words pop-up]
4- “My Words” dictionary search both ways [mainly so can find words have forgotten by translation, not for use as primary dictionary]
5- New color to indicate a word that is on a partials only list [i.e. not green like those on full study]
6- Windows 8 offline app [assume easier to make than android as can use flash]
7- Example sentences from Chinesepod for subscribers, with sound
8- For words, link back to Chinesepod glossary [could put in same place where have mdbg etc. lookup]
9- On web version, on multisyllable words on writing prompts, shortcut “E” should uncover the character details, then mnemonics (doesn’t do anything at moment)
10- New shortcut for “lookup more info” on the desktop
11- On web, on “Advanced Study” should be able to select one or more lists like can on IOS
12- On web, option to add X words like have on IOS
13- When add new word that is not in skritter in simplified (e.g. on an imported list), shouldn’t require also input the traditional characters also as may not know if are studying simplified only (likely requiring it will mean errors in traditional versions)
14- Actual % completed for a list, not on how far through a list have got (i.e. don’t ignore know lots of words later in the list)
15- In “lookup more info” popup of words/sentences, should be able to click through characters by arrows at top (like can on list of words), also more generally should be able to use computer arrow keys to use arrows on “lookup more info” (e.g. if looking at words on a word list)

Hopefully some others agree with these or some of these, and skritter team can consider … thanks!

I highly agree with 2 and 14

rmzhao82   August 28th, 2013 1:07a.m.

I mentioned 13 to Scott and he told me not to worry about it. Just do my best to guess. I think they may double check when new words are added? I don't know.

14 sounds useful

1. On the list.
2. We probably won't implement this.
3. We prefer our toughness rankings (which are calculated with HSK levels in the mix) to the HSK level indicators.
4. On the list to add search by definition. (We had been waiting for App Engine to improve support for this for years.)
5. Are you talking about the green circles that appear in a list section contents table to show progress? Why not use the advanced mode (click "more..." next to "Progress") to see all four parts?
6. No, sorry--the Flash app is extremely unsuited to conversion to an offline study model.
7. Interesting idea, but I think we'd prefer to focus on improving our own sample corpus (and recording sound for it) so that all users can benefit.
8. Good idea: the ChinesePod dictionary link is now implemented on beta.
9. Fixed on beta now, thanks!
10. To open the word popup? D/K? Or do you mean something else?
11. Sorry, we can't index the data for studying like this on the web.
12. When would you use this? We implemented it on iOS for the common use case of wanting to pre-add a bunch before going offline, but it's less clear how important it is on the web.
13. Yeah, just guess if you don't know the traditional variant--we check all the new words.
14. Another thorny database indexing problem--we don't have a way to do this performantly.
15. I don't think I'm quite clear on what you want here--can you explain more? (Also why it would be helpful.)

For 14, and generally all of your reporting of performance I would create a data mart from your transactional database. Using Pentaho and an opensource column store database this would be a piece of cake. I'd be willing to sign an NDA and help out if you are interested in exploring the idea.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for looking at those – sorry a couple weren’t clear, see below

1 – will be great!
2 – Understood.
3 – I meant HSK levels to go along side (not replace) the current toughness rankings.
4 – great!
5 – I meant in a word popup, the little green circles under the “Characters in XYZ” heading that indicate you know all the characters in the word/sentence – at moment have to click them all open/close to see full parts for each character, which can take a while in china, so would be a time-saver
6 – ok, I’m not a programmer so was just a thought … I’ll stick with IOS for offline then …
7 – Understood
8 – Great, thanks – I should also have suggested a link to the popupchinese dictionary (http://www.popupchinese.com/dictionary) at the same time – also works for non-subscribers in exactly same way as chinesepod, and allows subscribers to click through to relevant lessons
9 – Great, thanks.
10 –That’s exactly what I was looking for, works great!
11 – Ok, it’s a shame, as would be good to have option to choose lists to study on web rather than all or just one to study, but guess is programming issue.
12 – “Add X Words” can be used with “manually add” when you want to study X new words a day along with your reviews (e.g. add 20 each day) – not sure how else get to this result on the web (well, apart from using IOS to manually add the words, then study on the web).
13 – Guess it is!
14 – Another programming one, it is what it is I suppose.
15 – Currently when look at e.g. a textbook list of words, and open a word popup box, can use click visible arrows (with your mouse) at top of word popup box to move to next word in list – first point was would be good if could use computer arrow keys to do same thing. Second was, would be good to have the same arrows when have a word/sentence popup box open, and then open up a character from the “Characters in XYZ” column of the word pop-up (i.e. a popup in a popup) – i.e. have arrows to go between the characters in a word/sentence. Like 5, it’s another timesaver for when it takes 30 seconds to open/close each popup, which in turn is presumably a china only issue.

Thanks for the super speedy implementation of some of those!

Hi Nick, the chinesepod dictionary link that was implemented on beta and was working well has disappeared, hopeful it will make a return again?! (even with popupchinese link too ideally...) thanks

nick   September 18th, 2013 12:18p.m.

It's back up there now. I've also added the Popup Chinese dictionary link.

ricksh   September 20th, 2013 3:28a.m.

great, thanks Nick

ricksh   October 13th, 2013 1:19a.m.

hi nick - popupchinese link has dropped off beta (chinesepod still up and working well) - hopeful can go back on? thanks

nick   October 13th, 2013 1:48p.m.

You'd think I wouldn't have made the exact same svn mistake with not adding the Popup Chinese link right as I fixed the previous mistake with not adding the ChinesePod link... there. Sorry about that.
