Alpha Question: Adding Words/ Sections Manually?

InkCube   December 8th, 2010 6:39a.m.

The options for adding words manually or going to the next section manually seem to have disappeared from the active list menu and so for I haven't been able to find them anywhere else.
I really hope this doesn't mean that those options will be discontinued. I'm not adding words manually, but the manual section option is essential to the way I use scritter.

I've seen that you can pause/unpause lists on the study page now - which I like (even if I liked the old system better), but I think it should also tell you what section of that list you are on.

InkCube   December 8th, 2010 6:44a.m.

Okay, I've found the option where you can change the way words are added (fast - manually), but what about the sections?
Without that option I always have to be careful and constantly check while practicing if I'm done with adding from one section and if yes leave the practice page to pause that list.

+1 to still have Adding Words/ Sections Manually

Depending on my mood, I add words manually and found it convenient to quickly select the lists I wanted to add from, but now it looks like I have to go to each list page and activate Add, which does not make it better...

Well to make it clear, my request is to still have "Adding Words/ Sections Manually" but also selecting lists from within the Practice page for which I want to add characters.

Thanks for the input. We're running a poll and such to determine what to do with the active lists menu and the options within it. Through analytics, and while doing support, we've found that that menu isn't really serving its purpose, as not many people click there, and hardly anyone uses the manual-move-to-next-section option. So we're trying to gather more data on how useful those options are and where they would best fit.

I always appreciate how quick you guys react to feedback and problems.

I really would not mind at all if the manual-move-to-next-section option would be hidden away somewhere since I have it turned on constantly and I'd just have to unpause lists to start on the next section as it was before.

I have also been trying to find the sections, which I have practiced already.
I use Chrome 7 on Windows, and those sections finished are just shown as lines. I did not expect to see anything in there, but they opened up to be edited when clicked. I think that does not follow any GUI convention to have an empty list of lines. I could only see Section 7 as 1-6 were done.

BUG: Non updated Current Section in List Page

As I switch between reading and writing practice as I do not want to change Keyboard and Bamboo Pen all the time, I often end up with some characters not being added for Pinyin or Writing.
Right now restarting add from Section 1 does seem to work. Practice always continues to jump to Section 7. I activated all practicing types and did the restart, the active indicator still shows Section 7.

When I added manually on the practice page and continuing more Section 7 characters were added but it seems the originally non-added characters from Section 1 are appearing now, maybe some others from 7 were still in the queue.

I am not sure adding really worked, did it manually now, would be great if you could check this.
It is tedious to go through the sections and open the pop-up to add the missing writing or pinyin prompts. Tone and definition is no issue, as I have that one always on whether writing or reading.

Idea regarding the lines hiding the done section. Button with "View your finished sections". Costs even less space if you have many finished sections :-) and is more intuitive.

BUG extension:
It also does not save the change to reviewing when set on the list page. Doing it on the study page works though.
Guess it is the same save routine that does not work in the list settings page.

MasterOfComboBoxes   December 9th, 2010 12:34a.m.

Argh, ok it changed the settings on the study page to review. But somehow it just keeps adding words right now.
I went to study single list, and then it kept throwing new words at me. Does Skritter empty the queue first with vocabulary for this list before really going into review mode???

I think I've fixed the problem with it not being set to an earlier section, and it not going between adding and reviewing. I'm not 100% sure though because it's a tricky bug to reproduce it seems. Let me know if it popup up again.

The shortening was inspired by the way gmail hides earlier emails of a thread so it's fast to see the section you're currently working on. It's to help with the longer lists, so you don't have to scroll really far down to find the section you're mainly concerned about. Might try the button thing, but if it's not particularly helpful we may just scrap it and keep it simple.

We removed the add to queue button because it tended to confuse people, especially new users, thinking that that's the main way to add words. In general we want to encourage the use of lists rather than the queue. Hiding the section names when you first enter the list might be enough to deter new users though.

As for it adding, there will be a few words you may not have seen yet after you've switched to reviewing, there's a little bit of a delay there. Or does it seem to just add a lot more words regardless?

MasterOfComboBoxes   December 9th, 2010 2:12p.m.

Yep confirm it works now.
The review seemed to kick in after a while so should be ok.

Setting it back to section 1 and switching to reading, definition, tone practice for keyboard usage now starts adding in the missing words, coming in as new after I set back to add now.

Not sure if that is because the reset worked now or because I added them manually to the queue before.
In any case I currently have the desired results.

Thx for the quick fix.
