Missing words?

SpokeLee   February 19th, 2011 4:53a.m.

Looking back over my lists I've had a suspicion and it is confirmed now that I look over everything. Some of the words I have added from my lists never show up, or only one part will show up like I will get the writing, but not the definition, tone or pinyin. Is there a way I can go back and add all of these missing items?

This has happened to me too. I'm wondering if that's why the Skritter guys recently changed the study settings

This can happen if you a) have a list set to "adding" and b) change your study settings to only study let's say "readings". Then all the words added while you're only studying readings will have ONLY readings added. In order to get writings and tones and definitions, you would need to restart the list and run through it again to add the missing parts. This is generally quick. An alternative is to export all your words and then add them to your queue, but if you have a lot of words this can be a major pain.

That's why they recently added a "temporary parts study" setting, which pauses adding while you have certain parts disabled.

I always left on manual adding and have never turned off any parts. What exactly do I have to do to get these handful of words added?

SpokeLee   February 19th, 2011 8:38a.m.

It's like five words tops.

Oh in that case you can click on the hourglass (in study mode) or on the word itself (on the "My Words" page) to get the word popup. Then use the green buttons to add the missing parts.

Thank you, that worked!

This happened sometimes when there was a connection interruption and you left the page before it had finished adding everything, although it was rare and I think Scott recently added some code to prevent it. That might have been it.

That sounds like it was probably it. Because it hasn't happened recently and all of the words that were un-added were from like two months ago at least.

Is there a way to check for missing words that should have been added? Like, getting a list of all words (and their parts like reading / writing / definition) in my active lists, that have not yet been added?

mw   February 23rd, 2011 2:58a.m.

Remove the list from study and add it again ? Shouldn't that pick up anything that ís "missed" ?

You can also just reset the list to add from the beginning another time. Go to the list's page, click 'Change Study Settings' on the left side and choose to have it go through and add from whatever sections you want it to.

Currently the only way to check for missing words is to look through the sections themselves and look at the progress columns on the right side. I'm working on a system that will much better make sure that all words have been added from a list and that it is always up to date. Once that's up I'll recommend people reset all their lists to take full advantage of the new system.
