Big review backlogs

nick   March 12th, 2009 5:38p.m.

We just fixed another big scheduling bug that was preventing certain classes of items from coming up. For a lot of people, it'll just be tones. For others, it may be all traditional characters, or all simplified characters without traditional forms, etc.

Sorry about this, dear character commandos. With the new speed and scheduling fixed to not give you things too often, and all the words-not-loading bugs we know of fixed, you should be able to clear through it pretty quickly, and scheduling should return to normal a day or two after, with smaller review queues.

Thanks for your patience, everyone! We're still debugging over here, but we're getting to all the little stuff and the big things should be fixed.

Oh, I missed a part. You'll see all those held-back items come up now all at once, giving you a one-time big review backlog. But don't panic: it's just this once.

Ah my god, got nearly 800 items to review lol

Élie   March 14th, 2009 11:45a.m.

went through 700 items in a hour...arghhh

This does seem to be something of a problem. I was skrittering like crazy last week to catch up on the backlog. Had a day off at the weekend. Now 1141 words to review... I'm not sure that this is optimal in terms of learning (that is, we're moving towards the frustration end of the spectrum). Is there any way of tweaking the algorithm? Or might it be better for me to start from scratch (sign up for a new account, delete my current account, and start working again, steadily and methodically), as the overload seems to be getting in the way of effective memorisation?

All the best,
Will

Same thing here.
I just created a new account and back from scratch
(but being just a beginner, I was nowhere near the 1000+ words of thinkbuddha).

Also, it helped me to get rid of all the items I did not want to study anymore (I first messed up in selecting the study list, and plenty of unwanted characters kept coming up).

Good luck with the debugging.
David

I think something's going on with the scheduling; several users are reporting insane amounts of items due. We are investigating again and will let you know when we know what's going on.

followtheflow   March 16th, 2009 12:50p.m.

yeah I can definitely see an increase of items to be reviewed every day. most of them i definitely know (at that time at least) already, so it's a bit annoying.

thinkbuddha   March 16th, 2009 1:03p.m.

OK. I'll hang on to see if something can get sorted before doing anything as radical as deleting my account and starting again from scratch.

I hope you guys are getting some sleep between the endless task of squashing bugs.

Will :)

Okay we've tweaked the scheduling system so you shouldn't see such big backups so often. However, it will probably still happen from time to time, such as when you take an elongated break or you suddenly decide to study all those tones you turned off a while ago. So if you've got a lot of items to study, you can use the long talked about and now hastily built "Save Me!" button! Go to your vocabulary options page and you can have all your due items moved forward over however many days you would like. So if you put in five days, it will schedule about a fifth of the backlog on each day, in addition to anything that was already scheduled for those days. We're going to try to rework the scheduling algorithm so that you would need to use this button as little as possible, but some need for it is probably unavoidable.

Thanks again for your patience, everyone!

If you get a review item right, is the next time it's scheduled based on the time since last review, or the originally scheduled review time versus the previous review.

E.g.

Character reviewed on Monday, scheduled next review on Tuesday, but actually reviewed on Wednesday. Does the next scheduling work off two days or one day?

I have 625 items to review. But a little message just came up saying "Save me". Seems like Skritter read my mind on this one...

scott   March 16th, 2009 8:33p.m.

A little bit of both. It starts off with what you would normally have increased it by and then goes from there based on how far off you actually studied (whether or early or late). That was actually part of the problem which lead to so many reviews; it wasn't taking into account the late reviews enough and so items weren't being moved far enough ahead.

Thanks, guys. I'm hitting that button right now!
