Looking for reading material?

mratranslate   April 1st, 2014 11:14a.m.

Hi all,
I know about 1500 words and have found graded readers to be an enjoyable way of practising my Chinese. However, I appear to have run out of material, I have read all the breeze series and mandarin companion series which go from 300-750 words level. Where can I get more material at my level? Is there any?
Any links would be greatly appreciated
Xiao mai

I'm in the same spot, except that I' haven't finished all the 汉语风 yet. But I'm also looking for more series for when I'm done. There have been threads about graded readers on chinese-forums.com and I remember reading about some series going to quite a high level. Unfortunately I can't remember the names (and a quick search did no good).

edit: There is is a group read thread started recently for the series 天天中文: http://www.chinese-forums.com/index.php?/topic/44250-group-read-天天中文中文天天读/

thanks for the links lechuan

not sure whether they will work for me though - dim sum doesn't appear to be aimed at any particular level so looks like it may be too hard for me.

chinese stories looks better but wow the price...(and not in a good way) - I had better start saving or looking elsewhere! $9.99 per issue eek not good

Yeah, it seems a bit pricy. I have only used the free issues in the Chinese Stories app so far.

I ordered the 天天中文 books last week, so will see how they are.

thanks xiaokaka - some good books there, and the forum itself is new to me - looks like lots of good stuff/advice there, cheers

Is your Skritter count of ~1500 valid for how many words you know or do you know many that you never added to skritter?
My word count is sort of similar (with more characters though) and I always recommend not to be afraid of jumping into the cold water try a Chinese translation of an English novel that interests you.

There are a few more books of maybe similar or slightly higher level than the Chinese Breeze series, by Mandarin Companion. I have them all on Kindle (not sure if they're available in book form):

The Monkey's Paw
Sherlock Holmes and the Red-Headed League
The Sixty Year Dream

You can search for these on Amazon - there might be more.

I use an app called Novels which has a lot of content divided by level. I think it cost me some small amount like $3 inside the app. It gives you side by side English and Chinese and you can default to one or the other tapping a phrase for the Chinese version. It is in simplified characters. Another feature I like is that it allows me to select and copy to the clipboard usually all but the last sentence or two in a single pass, which I immediately float over to Pleco's Clipboard reader with custom font sizes and reading aloud etc.

Thank you for posting in this form, and I apologize for steering this topic a little off its original rails...

Does the Mandarin Companion come in traditional form? Or just simplified?

The Mandarin Companion has not (yet?) been released in traditional characters.

For anyone interested, I recently added the vocab for two level 3 Chinese Breeze 汉语风 which weren't available on Skritter before, The Painted Skin 画皮 and The Third Eye 第三只眼睛.

There is a new thread on chinese-forums.com listing a lot of different readers, including if they are simiflified/traditional, page count, and word level.
