quotes at the bottom of the page

bluedaisy   August 15th, 2009 11:28a.m.

Is there anyway to disable the quotes at the bottom of the page? They're kind of distracting.

You could always have a piece of masking tape handy and use that...

nick   August 17th, 2009 6:07p.m.

Hmm. I have disabled them for you, bluedaisy. Does anyone else want this? If so, we can make a preference.

Nicki   August 17th, 2009 7:57p.m.

I enjoy the quotes!

thinkbuddha   August 18th, 2009 2:24a.m.

It might be worth making it a preference (or maybe the quotes could be included under "eccentric flavor" in the options). I don't really notice them at all, but it would be good to be able to turn off any potential distractions.

I love them, they make the service seem like it's run by some nice human beings instead of a sterile corporation though I suppose I do see how they could be distracting.

My bias is always to take out the fluff that doesn't help to achieve the goals (e.g. learning Chinese) but making it fun helps to achieve the goal so I'm on the fence. If it were Chinese proverbs (with pinyin, characters and a translation) than I'd say 100% keep it.

Nicki   August 18th, 2009 3:56a.m.

Maybe toss in a few funny quotes in Chinese.

Matthias   August 18th, 2009 1:06p.m.

loving the quotes, keep them coming.

bluedaisy   August 18th, 2009 2:19p.m.

thanks! it's not that I don't like them, it's just that I notice them, then mouse over to see where they're from, then start thinking about that book/movie/etc., next thing I know it's ten minutes later and I'm on wikipedia...

thinkbuddha   August 19th, 2009 10:30a.m.

I didn't know you could mouse-over them. I've been wondering "I wonder where all those quotes come from" for months on end.
Add a few in Chinese might be good fun.

rjberki   August 19th, 2009 3:29p.m.

So many familiar faces here, and I like the quotes.

nick   August 19th, 2009 6:18p.m.

I don't have a ton of power for adding Chinese-language ones, but I'm open to submissions / suggestions for sources.

conormae   August 20th, 2009 8:08a.m.

Leave them! Love 'em. The Firefly quote was pretty much the selling point for me, hehe.

faceleg   August 25th, 2009 5:27a.m.

I like them, but I would also like an option to turn them off.
