Android progress graphs?

nick   June 27th, 2011 7:54p.m.

I went to debug the progress graphs not showing up on Android using my Galaxy Tab 10.1", but now they're working! I can't remember if they were working before when it was on 3.0, or whether they just started working in 3.1, or maybe we did something else that fixed this.

To those Skritterers with other Android devices:
1) Do the graphs on the progress page work?
2) What Android device?
3) What Android version is it?

Thanks!

1) The graphs on my progress page do not work. There is what looks like white text highlighted in red just appearing almost off the top of the white space in the box where the graphs should be. In the box at the bottom it says: "read property 'appendChild' of null" again in white text highlighted in red. The number statistics are still there, and look like they're probably correct.

2) Google Nexus One

3) 2.3.4

It still doesn't work on mine. What browser are you testing on?

My user agent:
Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en_us; SC-01C Build/FROYO) AppleWebKit/530.17 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 NetFrontLifeBrowser/2.2 Mobile (Dragonfruit)

I have the 7 inch GALAXY Tab.

1) I can see the graphs. Changing dates is very slow (reloads page). Changing graphs is a bit slow.
It's ok for me!
2) Asus EEE Pad
3) 3.1

So it looks like the SVG support is required for that particular flavor of Google Charts, and Android doesn't have it until 3.0. It works in IE via a workaround, but that's not enabled for Android, either.

So I've replaced those two charts with really basic versions of them using the older Google Image Charts on Android. I am hoping that the code I used to detect whether SVG is enabled or not will actually work, but I cannot test. Let me know if you still don't see charts on Android, or if your browser has started giving you lamer-looking charts on non-Android.

@nick Maybe this is a good time to bring up some very strange behavior I've been seeing lately in Chrome 13.0.782.32.

When I go to the progress page, about one time in three I get something like this:

If I refresh, or zoom in or out, it usually fixes itself.

Another problem is that the progress graphs are almost always the wrong size. At the default zoom they're fine, but if I'm zoomed in (which I typically am, as I run at a high resolution and I like to have everything larger to compensate) I get something like this:

Note that the graph doesn't scale smoothly with the page. And if I zoom out, which I occasionally do, I get something like this, with the labels overlapping the graph:

ddapore99   June 29th, 2011 1:37a.m.

I'm using 12.0.742.112 of Chrome and Chrome is telling me it's up to date. Are you using a beta version James?

peanutbutter   June 29th, 2011 2:08a.m.

Working just fine on htc desire hd with android 2.3x

Awesome; glad to get that fixed. I have been chewing through these Android bugs that have been on my list forever as a consequence of an exercise in noticing rationalization. When I notice it, I then compensate for it, and it makes me way better at both debugging and at not persuading myself to avoid frustrating bugs.

James, I have been seeing the same thing, and only in Chrome 13. I am guessing that it's something to do with Chrome 13 and the SVG that those Google Charts use. I think I'll wait for it to be fixed in Chrome 14 or stable Chrome 13 rather than to try to debug that. (Chrome 13 also had made some weirdness with the canvas element on our buttons on Linux--dunno if that's still happening.)
