skritter web, waiting for word/character forever

Mats   January 18th, 2013 4:13a.m.

Hi, almost once a day skritter stops working in th middle of getting a new character and work, currently on fetching 色 in 咖啡色. I get the three dots in upper corner blinking.
I can let it wait forver, so usually I just hit 'save' button in right corner and go to 'Progress' page and then back to 'Study' again or restart Chrome.

I'm on skritter web, Mac OS 10.6.8, Chrome 24.0.1312.52.
Known problem?

Tangqiuyue   January 18th, 2013 4:24a.m.

Just a guess but... try switching to Firefox? I'm not getting any problems with Firefox... (But I'm on a PC not a Mac, so it is hard to compare..)

Mats   January 18th, 2013 9:16a.m.

Well I used to use Firefox but was recommended to try out Chrome some months ago when having problems, maybe I'll jump back again ;)

junglegirl   January 18th, 2013 11:22a.m.

It happens to me on Firefox too. I do sit around and wait for it and eventually it moves, but it sometimes takes a couple of minutes.

I'm on a PC.

Is this something that has started happening more since a few days ago, or was it happening the same before the 15th?

Mats   January 18th, 2013 1:19p.m.

This has been before 15th too I think...

I'm not sure how I can help debug, maybe I can run a tcpdump or something while studying next time :)

junglegirl   January 18th, 2013 4:41p.m.

I think it's been fairly recent for me, but the 15th sounds a bit too recent. Sorry I can't be of more help.

nick   January 18th, 2013 10:44p.m.

A tcpdump is probably overkill. Using Chrome's developer tools network panel to see if some requests are not returning or have errors will probably be better, but you have to start the network panel before the request you're concerned about starts.

I haven't experienced the problem again but will report back if so, I have network debug window open now ;)

marleendemol   January 22nd, 2013 2:03a.m.

I have experienced the same thing, had it again last night. But it is not too frequent...

Mats   January 27th, 2013 3:03a.m.

Now it just happened, during tone review on web. I did not have the developers tools window up when it started but opening it up it looks like this: http://i48.tinypic.com/20th5ir.jpg

Although after saving picture, uploading and writing this text, like 5-6 minutes, it shows second character in 服务员 so just along delay.

nick   January 28th, 2013 1:43a.m.

Hmm. It looks like a straight-up connection problem. The client keeps retrying the request to download that stroke, but it takes many tries before it can connect and download it. When you see this pause happen, can you access other websites right at that moment?

Mats   January 28th, 2013 3:50p.m.

Yes I recall not having other problems, I can go back to 'progress' page and then start again

Mats   May 16th, 2013 2:16a.m.

Hi I'm still getting problems with this, last night and just currently it fails to fetch some part of the 'ju' in 'zaoju' (造句), it's really annoying.
It's in the 'draw' review, I draw 'zao' and then it starts waiting..

As usual I have to abort by selecting e.g. 'progress' and go back to start 'study' again. I don't recall this problem happened on iPad/iPhone.

Mats   May 16th, 2013 2:20a.m.

Just posting this I got back and restarted Study again, after a few words I got 'zaoju' again, this time it worked...
