Words due notification

russell359   September 13th, 2013 9:56p.m.

Hi, would it be possible to add a 'words/characters due' notification to the iOS app? so that I can review the characters/words at the sweet spot rather than when their 'overdue'. Something like a standard iOS notification that says, "You've got cards due" or something. Tried to search on the forum for a previous post, found nothing. Not sure why this isn't implemented already.

how would this work? also Russell why is your characters so few but I see you post on here a lot, confusing! :)

xiaomai5, lol, I just nuked that's why :D, (see the nuke date in my profile). I was 700ish characters before, but decided to start again. I got a bit stuck. Limiting myself to just two or three lists now, rather than the 15 I had before and now I'm trying to make sure I practice more reading(context) for the characters/words that appear in Skritter, using Nuli!努力! http://beta.nulinu.li/

So how would this work? That's more a question for Nick and the guys really. I'm not a programmer. But I guess you mean when would it send you notifications? Well it wouldn't be great if it sent you a notification for every character/word due. So perhaps there could be an amount set, so that once Skritter reaches a certain number of characters/words to review it will notify you. Perhaps this could be user determined. It's just that other Chinese learning apps I've tried will show you notifications and have a number on their icon to show you how many cards you have to review, like the trainchinese app (http://www.trainchinese.com/v1/a_user/index.php). It would be nice to see this in Skritter too, in my opinion. Perhaps Nick and the guys don't like notifications. Which is up to them and understandable.

Got idea Russell! I got into the same problem in adding two many words and after a period of inactivity I got up to 14,000 words due!!! I used the 'Save Me' function over 100 days or so and now it is much more manageable.

I was finding also a lot with the words I was reviewing that I had forgotten their context. So now I star those words and look up their context in ChinesePod, nciku etc., and changing the definition to what is commonly used.

It means that I have not been adding a lot of words the past 3 weeks, but I am improving my comprehension which is good :-).

joeymac1981, wow 14,000 due! that's incredible. Perhaps we could have opt in email notifications too, for those without the app, that nags you to come back, could be daily or weekly or whatever and tell you how many reviews are due each time, counting up...

Instead of notifying you when a certain amount is due it could instead notify when a character reaches a certain percentage due, so that character would act like a gate keeper, preventing the other characters from becoming overdue, by alerting you and getting you to review them.

some thoughts - I have lots of lists - I only study for about 30-45 minutes a day and the reviews are more than manageable so your experiences are new to me. skritter controls the addition of words for me.

re notifications - I would find this very annoying. So if implemented I hope there is a feature to turn it off please! I know when I go on there will be around 100-150 reviews so the exact number does not concern me. I can't think why you would want to know this but respect your request.

sorry if this grates against a couple of others opinions on here but I want to give a representation of all views.

russell359   September 15th, 2013 4:22a.m.

Xiaomai5 ios has a notification control center which allows you switch off notifications for apps so no problem with that. Also when you first install an app in ios it asks whether you want to allow notifications.

I have no problem with your views. I just think that not everyone can be quite so regular with their reviews and would appreciate having the option to turn on reminders / notifications.

cheers Russell, understand your point of view. glad they can be turned off. best of luck with your studies.

Russell359,

That Nuli seems to be simplified characters. Is that true? Can you do traditional too?

russell359   September 15th, 2013 9:51p.m.

I use New Tong Wen Tang in Chrome to switch the characters to traditional. The developers started with simplified first. They do plan on adding traditional later.

Also their word/character lookup system only recognizes simplified or traditional with no simplified form, so I just type in the characters using a simplified keyboard on computer.

It'd be great to have badges (and the notifications), but I don't think that Skritter calculates the # of reviews due in the background, so these wouldn't show up until you're already running it...

russell359   September 16th, 2013 6:43a.m.

Nomadwolf the new ios7 app version supports background sync (as per newsletter) so that shouldn't be an issue after its initial release.

It's technically possible to do both the due-reviews badge and the notification, although not with perfect accuracy. It is not simple, though. We did a survey a while back somewhere asking about this from the app beta testers, and it was fairly split whether they wanted the badges (but most didn't want the notifications). Ultimately, we decided it was a good idea, but not the highest priority.

At some point, I'd like to get the badge number in there. I think a lot of other things will get done first, though.
