what the heck ...

Bohan   August 30th, 2011 12:05a.m.

I've already selected "reset my lists to the beginning", when I switch between writing/definitions/tones. I've done this at least 4/5 times already, but I'm still getting the message that pops up asking me if I want to leave my lists where they are or reset to the beginning.

This is kind of irritating. How do I make it stop ? Also, it seems like I've had much fewer items due everyday in my review queue since the recent site update

scott   August 30th, 2011 12:55a.m.

How often do you change the parts that you are studying? The popup really isn't intended to be viewed very often; these sorts of settings are really built to be kept the same way for the long term. Do you just want to study certain parts at certain times? If so you can temporarily review individual parts from the study page, if you click the 'settings' button in the upper right corner.

Basically, why do you need to change what parts you're studying so often? There's probably a better way.

Bohan   August 30th, 2011 5:55a.m.

Hey Scott,

Basically, the way I study on Skritter is, I always do one thing at a time. When I'm practicing writing, I only do writing until I think to myself "that's enough writing for now", at which point I'll probably switch over to studying tones. When I study tones, I only study tones, without doing writing, definitions, or readings. When I've done enough tones, I'll switch over to studying definitions. When I study definitions, I do them separately from everything else.

This is always the way I use Skritter, whether I'm studying a new set of words, or going through my review queue. I think it's much more efficient than doing everything together, or even studying two parts together.

I agree that there should be an easier/faster way to switch between parts, but I remember that the way I'm currently doing it is the only way to do it, unless something has changed or if I was wrong from the beginning. Can I do what you said with a new set of words ? Another thing is that when I go to "settings", in the upper right corner of the study page, it doesn't even seem to let me change anything another than whether or not I want the pinyin hidden. This is one of the things I've never understood on the Skritter site. I'm sure there is some sort of logic to it, but up until now it's been a mystery to me.

Should I just keep clicking "reset to the beginning" every time I see that pop-up, after adjusting which parts to study ?

@Bohan - Go to the Study page, start studying something, then click "Settings". You should see several options to enable temporary parts study for writing, definitions, etc.

nick   August 30th, 2011 8:57a.m.

You have to have all of the parts enabled in the account page version (your normal parts study settings) before the temporary parts study settings on the study page will let you temporarily choose one part at a time, which is indeed what you want to do.

Bohan   August 31st, 2011 5:22a.m.

@jww1066 Cool, thanks !!

@Nick Oh, okay, I didn't know that all the parts must be enabled in order to use that other function.
So can I also do it like this for new lists ? Will it affect the SRS thing in any way ?

nick   August 31st, 2011 8:18a.m.

When you do it like that, it temporarily turns off adding, because otherwise it might skip over some parts in the list. So you can only do that for reviewing.

Bohan   August 31st, 2011 8:45a.m.

@Nick Oh okay, so should I change study parts the other way when I'm studying new material ? (as in, click on "Bohan" at the top of the page, and then click "more" and then change the study parts there ?

scott   August 31st, 2011 1:32p.m.

You should go to the study settings here:

http://www.skritter.com/account/settings-study

And choose to study all the parts that you ever want to study, even if you want to study them separately. For example, if you never want to study definitions, leave them out, but if you want to study definitions at all, check the box for it.

Then when you want to study individual parts from the study page choose to temporarily study a subset of the parts. Then adding will be paused and you'll just go through your review queue for the part or parts you have selected.

Bohan   September 4th, 2011 6:38a.m.

I've been doing it the way you guys told me every time I work on my review queue items. For new lists I'm going to do it the other, in which I adjust the permanent settings. When I do it like this, I get that pop-up . Should I always just click all of the lists that appear and then select "reset to the beginning" ?

nick   September 4th, 2011 9:58a.m.

No, because that will be very slow--Skritter has to go all the way back to the beginning of the list and one-by-one check for new items throughout the sections.

One way that might work better for you is to leave all the permanent part settings enabled, hit the manual add word button a bunch of times in a row to get the desired number of new words, and then switch to the temporary parts to review them.

Bohan   September 4th, 2011 10:09a.m.

oh jeez, this sounds like a bit of a hassle. Is there anything that can be done to make this a bit more convenient ?

nick   September 4th, 2011 10:15a.m.

The simplest thing you could do would be to study all the parts together while you're adding new words. Other than that, we haven't come up with anything.

Bohan   September 4th, 2011 10:29a.m.

@Nick okay, I'll do that, but it would be cool if there were a way I could do the parts separately for new words in the future

Bohan   October 13th, 2011 4:22p.m.

@Nick

When you wrote "that will be very slow--Skritter has to go all the way back to the beginning of the list and one-by-one check for new items throughout the sections " , did you mean that if I chose to do it this way I'll have to re-practice items over and over again, possibly even for every session ?

Since I made this thread back in August, I've tried Skrittering new lists by going through the items while studying all parts (tones, writing, def.) on at once, because I can't do them one at a time for new items. I gave this method a fair chance, and I've decided that I truly dislike it. Since I'm going to be frequently adjusting the permanent settings and getting that pop-up, should I expect to be re-reviewing items over and over again ?

nick   October 13th, 2011 8:10p.m.

The progress on the items will stay the same, so they won't keep coming up for review just because you're going through the list again. It just takes Skritter a while to look through the list from the beginning to check for items that need to be added, so you can be sitting there a while while it says "Still looking for one to add...".
