Weird things that I found.

戴金霸   June 28th, 2012 11:34a.m.

I am not sure if they are bugs but they seem weird to me.

1. Number of cards to review do not seem to be the same in all devices. My iPhone said I have 156 and the iPad said 141, the web said 157. Sometimes the differences are quite large like 3 and 300

2.Sometimes the pronunciation does not work and I have to restart the app to get it to work again. The speaker icon turns orange when this happens. This is different form when Skritter does not have pronunciation for the word and the icon got a cross on it. I still trying to find a way to reproduce this. It happened twice now.

3.This evening when I go to forum from the app, it show me the web version of the forum instead of the apps one which make text really large and difficult to read. This is also the same when I follow the link mentioned in the forum.

戴金霸   June 28th, 2012 12:10p.m.

4. The number of cards reduces more then one at a time. Sometimes I do one and it reduces 5-10.

All of those might just be me not understand how the apps work so I would appreciate it if any body can shade some light.

Alan   June 28th, 2012 9:26p.m.

I have noticed the same thing as point 4. With me it often decreases by about 3 to 5

I have also had a problem a couple of times where the app says it is "Syncing", but never finishes. A force-quit and restart has always seemed to cause it to say it has correctly finished, with no side-effects noticed so far...

Alan   June 29th, 2012 12:06a.m.

As for your point 1, I just noticed that I couldn't get the website to update to reflect the 100 cards that I had just studied on the iPhone app, when I went back to the main screen, quitting and restarted, etc. However when I force-quitted and re-opened the iPhone app the website instantly recognised the items as 'studied'.

It is a bit inconsistent though; I studied a few more, went back to the main screen of the app, and the total was immediately reflected when I refreshed the website.

jll90   June 29th, 2012 4:54a.m.

I've encountered a similar problem to the one stated in the first comment by 戴金霸.

Basically, the app does not think I've any reviews left to do. It keeps showing me new characters. However, when I log on skritter.com, it turns out I've several hundreds of reviews to do. Is there any way to fix this?

Also, even when the app detects I've reviews to do the number may go down from say, 339 to 321, which doesn't really make sense.

Thank you

cmccorvey   June 29th, 2012 7:42a.m.

I have noticed the behavior on my iPhone 4s where the number of reviews due decrements by much more than one as I successfully handle a card. This doesn't always happen, but I notice it pretty option.

However, the behavior (that is the cards offered for review) seems to be about right (as best as I can tell).

DependableSkeleton   June 29th, 2012 10:57a.m.

If I add a word, my number of due items increases by 3. (I am studying writing, tones and definitions.) Some time after Skritter prompts me for the new writing, it realizes that it doesn't want to give me the other two new prompts yet, so it will suddenly reduce my number of due items by 2 to compensate for this "secret" rescheduling.

Many hours later, I'll be studying and Skritter will decide it's time to give me a whole slew of (previously deferred) new tone or new definition prompts and the number of due items will jump by a lot. It seems like sometimes the number of due items will be increased by too much and so after a few minutes, Skritter will suddenly decrease the number of due items.

I have seen my number of due items run down by several dozen at a time. It doesn't really bother me though.

1) We're working on diagnosing the problems with syncing the reviews. Small differences are expected if you have been studying, but large ones typically mean that either the reviews you've done on a device have not been synced to the server yet, or something bad has happened during a sync where some items were missed. You can go to the home screen from the study screen to force a sync, and you can use the Settings - Account - Status to check whether the local data is complete.

2) I think I know what's causing this; it might be a problem where you multitask out of the app while it's talking, and it doesn't know it has stopped talking and so won't say any more sounds until the app restarts. If that's it, then I'll get that fixed for the next version.

3) This one is really weird. Does it do this consistently? Is anyone else seeing this?

4) This is intentional, for now. You're actually reviewing or spacing out multiple items, where a word's prompt can contain multiple items (for its component characters), and also push back other parts for the same word so that they're not due right now. Later, we'll change it to counting in words rather than items.

Olaf   June 29th, 2012 1:21p.m.

I just went to the Settings - Account - Status area out of curiosity now and saw that the "items" category has a mismatch.

What does this mean?

戴金霸   June 29th, 2012 10:02p.m.

@ nick Thanks for the explanation. Number 3 might be related to the fact that when I follow the long posted in the forum, it take me to the full web version instead of take me to safari ?

Talking about forum, can you add more functionality? I think the treads are too many and most of them are too sort. They need grouping a bit and bit more of looking after.
Something like pleco forum would be great. I am here because skritter get mentioned in pleco forum, btw. :) and I am not disappointed. I can see how skritter can improve my writing tremendously.

One more request. Can you make the sound lounder? Pronunciation is ok for now but the sound effects are berely audible. I want to hear my sword screeching on the drak theme. ^_^

Finally thanks for inventing the skritter.

nick   June 30th, 2012 4:18p.m.

Olaf, you might need to sync again from scratch after clearing the local data in order to try for a clean sync.

戴金霸, you followed the "long" posted in the forum? Link? Was it showing the web version of the forum before you clicked the link, or was it the mobile version?

We will redo the forum to make it into a native view instead of a web view, but we probably aren't going to add too many features to it, preferring to keep the forum simple.

I'll work on the sound effect volume, sure. It's bit wacky right now because of some inconsistencies in how the volume ends up coming out in response to our volume control code.

Talafar   June 30th, 2012 8:39p.m.

All the forums really need is for a reply in a thread to bump that thread to the top of the list. It would stop good threads getting buried by new questions.

That would keep it simple but make it much more usable.

戴金霸   June 30th, 2012 10:40p.m.

Nick, pictures might speak millions charecters here. How can I send you some screen shorts ? I follow the link in one of my thread about stroke order standard. The link take me to the stroke order research page. It is in mobile version before I follow the link but show me the research page in full web version. Once there I have no way to go back to forum but to use the link on the top of the page which will then show me the forum in full version.

Talafar. Good idea!!

atdlouis   July 1st, 2012 12:02a.m.

Actually that is an option you can enable, so that each new post bumps the thread to the top. I have it enabled.

I was going to try to find out how I did it, to explain to you ... but I couldn't find the option! This definitely should be the default setting for the forum. I don't even think it should be an optional setting - that's just an unnecessary choice.

穆安   July 1st, 2012 8:01a.m.

Just click on the "created" title, then it will switch to "updated" and the threads with new posts are shown on the top always...

nick   July 1st, 2012 10:05p.m.

戴金霸, I get it now and know what you must be seeing. I will devise a fix for an upcoming app update.
