Chinese Breeze (series 1 and 2)

thinkbuddha   February 1st, 2012 1:36p.m.

Hi, folks,

Just a quick note to say that I've got a bundle of old Chinese Breeze readers (series 1 and 2, incomplete, but about 8 mini-books/CDs in all) that I'm wanting to get rid of to free up shelf space for... more Chinese books. If anybody (UK only, sorry!) wants them, I can stick them in the post free of charge. Some are scrawled in a little, most are decent enough to work with.

Get in touch below (students & the otherwise impoverished will be favoured, though I'll do this on a more or less first-come-first-served basis!) and I can sort out sending them out. I'm looking for a single good home for these books. I may chuck in another couple of Chinese-related things too. I need that shelf-space!

All the best,

Will

Ooh, that sounds amazing - have been looking for some Chinese Breeze to borrow for a while, but my library doesn't have them, nor does the language centre at university. Could I call dibs on them (I definitely qualify as an impoverished student, of the postgraduate kind), and I promise to pass them on to others when I've finished reading them :)

thinkbuddha   February 1st, 2012 2:16p.m.

They're yours Claire! The best thing is to email me your address. To avoid putting my email up here and attracting spambots, your best bet might be to send it via my website contact form: http://www.willbuckingham.com/contact

I'll try and get these in the post tomorrow. Good luck with the postgrad study! And have fun with the conjoined twins, evil twins, and other bizarre stories in the Chinese Breeze series...

If anyone is planing to buy any of the Chinese Breeze series, Cheng & Tsui has pretty good prices compared to some of the other internet booksellers.

Catherine :)   February 11th, 2012 3:16p.m.

Awwh, too slow. Have you got any left? I've been looking for those for aaages.

thinkbuddha   February 12th, 2012 4:20a.m.

Hi, Catherine,

Sorry! I sent them all down to Claire; but if you ask her nicely, she might be able to send them on to you afterwards. I bought some of them from ChinaSprout.com - if you buy a batch, it's possibly cheaper than buying from the UK. In the UK http://www.chinesebookshop.com/ do them. Or Manchester might be a good bet.

Incidentally, it is true - as rumoured - that the Uni library in Sheffield has an impressive collection of books in and about Chinese?

Best wishes,
Will

I'll have a look there, thanks. Delivery from the US is usually an issue though as I never want to buy very many at once.

Our library does have an impressive collection of Chinese literature and other books, and also the architecture library has a lot of research into east Asian architecture, something I've been dipping into. But I've not had any luck finding anything in Chinese at my level!

Hi Catherine,
I'm currently reading my way through the books - 2 down, 8 to go - and am more than happy to send them on afterwards, if that would suit you?

I like the idea of mailing a single book around and as it passes through different hands people sign the back of it in Chinese.

Catherine :)   February 13th, 2012 8:10a.m.

Claire,

That would be awesome thanks! :)
Take your time. I'm pretty sure I'll only be able to read the early ones, so feel free to send the others on to someone who'll get more out of it.

Hopefully we can introduce a good sort of chain mail!

Catherine

thinkbuddha   February 13th, 2012 8:51a.m.

Good sort of chain mail sounds like a plan! Sadly I didn't get round to signing it on the back, 孟志书!

Thaks for the tips on Sheff library, Catherine. Time to get out my SCONUL card and get myself access, as the Chinese collections here in Leicester are not so hot.

Catherine :)   February 13th, 2012 4:44p.m.

SCONUL?
If you do look around, it helps to know that the Chinese books are split across two sites - but they're walking distance apart so it's not much of a problem. I'm not familiar with what sorts of books are in each, I just know that in one there is a basement full of big old intimidating-looking books in Chinese!

thinkbuddha   February 14th, 2012 3:33a.m.

http://www.access.sconul.ac.uk/ - it's a way of using other academic libraries. I got myself a School of Oriental and African Studies borrowers card through it (SOAS library is heaven for Chinese geekery...)

@Claire
I just received the books, thank you! I'll be sure to pass them on to someone when I'm finished - if nobody replies here on Skritter, I guess I'll start them circulating around my class.

Catherine :)   March 2nd, 2012 8:53a.m.

Also - I just found that you made Skritter lists for the readers - yay!!

clairehansell86   March 2nd, 2012 12:49p.m.

Glad you got them OK, and if I were you i'd check the lists I made carefully before use as i'm sure i'll have made mistakes in there somewhere. Although I think I only made a couple of lists, most of the work has already been done by other people :)

Have fun with the 连体人 and the 氰化物 and all of the other applicable-to-daily-life vocab...

clairehansell86   June 23rd, 2012 4:58a.m.

Hi all,

Just to say that i've still got the series 2 books from thinkbuddha and have finished them all - does anyone want them? 6 books in all - Green Phoenix, If i didn't have you, Mother and Son, After the accident, Secrets of a computer company and Our geese have gone.

Anyone call dibs? Postage to the UK only i'm afraid, my bank balance won't stretch to abroad :)
