Simplified spoiler example sentences

Schnabelhund   March 12th, 2013 11:47a.m.

I brought this issue up several times before, but maybe it wasn’t very clear what the problem was. So here’s a screentshot:

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/77841672/tent.jpg

There are two problems with the example sentence:

1. I want to see them in traditional characters. Even when a review is in Traditional, the sentence is simplified, so I switched from "Traditional and previously added Simplified" to plain "Traditional", but it’s STILL shown in Simplified.

2. The greater of the two evils: The example sentence GIVES AWAY the simplified form of the character I’m supposed to recall and write down. This is not acceptable.

Please please please fix these problems. They have been around for ages now.

Thanks for the screenshot. I've got it on the top of my list and hope to fix it as part of doing the sentence update to the iOS app.

So it’s been over a month since I brought this up the last time and it’s still not fixed. I know we Traditional Chinese learners are second class customers so we put up with lots of shortcomings, but this really is too serious a flaw to not fix it. I’m tired of having to consciously look away from the example sentences, especially when I’m not sure how to use a word.

We're planning a sentence hacking session for the end of this month and are going to fix a bunch of this stuff then.

Schnabelhund   April 15th, 2013 8:37p.m.

Then please disable the example sentences until the fix is done. Showing the characters, even the simplified version, completely destroys the purpose of using Skritter in the first place. And being constantly reminded of the flaw seriously affects my motivation to study.

Sure--I've turned the sentences off for your account on beta for now.

Schnabelhund   April 23rd, 2013 4:58p.m.

I wish I wouldn't have to complain so much, but I'm on beta and am seeing example sentences complete with both problems:

I think I finally fixed it on beta. How about now?

Schnabelhund   April 25th, 2013 6:05p.m.

Now the sentences in Simplified are problematic:

nick   April 25th, 2013 8:57p.m.

Ah, right. 现在呢?

Schnabelhund   April 27th, 2013 1:05a.m.

Seems to work now. Thank you.

Schnabelhund   April 27th, 2013 9:56a.m.

Please let me know when the fix is stable.

nick   April 27th, 2013 4:33p.m.

Okay, great. Sorry for the delay on that, and thanks for all the debugging help! Let me know if you see any more issues.

It'll go to the stable version around May 15 with our monthly release cycle.

learninglife   April 28th, 2013 2:32p.m.

@Nick. i also dont trust the example sentences a lot. how will they be generated in the future?

nick   April 28th, 2013 3:08p.m.

Sorry, I'm not sure I understand what you're asking. Skritter has a database of sentences assembled from various sources plus user contributions. When you see the prompt for a word, it picks a sentence containing that word from our database, sorted by user popularity and the easiness of the sentence. If you look at the sentence list popup, you can choose other sentences (which also votes for them and helps them get to the top) or make your own new sentences.

Did that answer your question?

learninglife   April 28th, 2013 3:19p.m.

yes. and i already contributed a tiny share of improvement by correcting one mistake :)
i was just wondering if any beginner could just enter a sentence he/she makes up and we have to put up with it. no quality control? or a kind of self-regulating system?
would one option be to let a native speaker correct/ edit/create the example sentences?

nick   April 28th, 2013 6:11p.m.

It's like the mnemonics: anyone can add things, but unless you go looking, you won't see anything except the most-popular entries, which will be replaced by better entries if users don't like what's there, or which will be corrected via the current feedback system for submitting corrections to words.
