Motorola Xoom Tablet

tubatime1010   March 18th, 2011 10:13p.m.

I got a Xoom about a week ago and they just released beta flash support today. After installing flash I tried to use skritter and I can see everything and the study page functions like normal except for the actual cursor. I cannot get it to move and draw the character.

Is this likely a device issue or is there a setting I need to mess with in skritter?

Hi tubatime1010! Please visit this link and tell me what your user agent string is:
http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

That info should be enough for me to enable Android mode for that device. Thanks!

I've put up a preliminary layout for it right now, where writing should work. The zoom isn't right, though; it's made for the Galaxy Tab, which has a smaller screen resolution. I also have never tested on an Android 3.0 device before.

It would be helpful if you could send me a screenshot or photo of what the layout ooks like, or a detailed description. That'll help me get the layout working better for you without having access to one of these devices yet. You could send it to nick@.com.

Hey Nick I am using a 7" Nook Color to access Skritter, which works fine except that the zoom isn't right. It currently only takes up half the length and width of the screen and I can't really zoom into it.
Is it possible for you to adjust the zoom somehow? Because that way it's far too small.

My user agent is: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.3; en-us; Nook Color Build/GR140) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Safari/533.1

followtheflow   March 24th, 2011 2:30a.m.

Update: it's slightly bigger (maybe 2/3 of the screen) with Opera mobile (Opera/9.80 (Android 2.3.3; Linux; Opera Tablet/ADR-1103211415; U; en) Presto/2.7.81 Version/11.00), but still far from perfect...

@followtheflow there used to be a special magic setting to futz with the DPI. If Nick hasn't disabled it, maybe you could try playing with the DPI number and see if you can find a setting that works:

Thanks James, I have tried that, unfortunately to no avail. :(

nick   March 25th, 2011 5:13p.m.

I've uploaded another version which looks for the Nook Color (on the Android browser, not yet on Opera mobile, yikes!). Give it a shot and see if it's better.

followtheflow   March 27th, 2011 12:56a.m.

Hmm I've tried the stock browser and some others but it still looks the same... :-\

nick   March 27th, 2011 4:03p.m.

followtheflow, try this URL:
http://www.skritter.com/study/all?android=true&tablet=true

If that works, then try this one and tell me if it's different:
http://www.skritter.com/study/all?android=true

Thanks!

Sorry for my belated response, I have just tried both pages. And the tablet version is somewhat bigger, which is already quite nice. But it still doesn't take up the full screen.

My actual screen measures 9cm x 15cm or about 3.5in x 6in (resolution 1024x600) and I can actually nearly use all of it, since I only got a status bar which takes up not even a centimeter. The tablet version takes up about 6cm x 10cm (~2.35in and 4in) and the normal version is just about 5cm x 8.5cm (~2in and ~3.3in).

Would be awesome if you could offer another version which is even bigger. It's probably best if there is just a link that one can use since there are so many different tablets of different sizes, versions and browsers...

nick   March 29th, 2011 6:43p.m.

Huh, that's weird. Can you confirm that your User Agent String does include "Nook Color" exactly? It really should be automatically picking up that tablet layout...

I'll have to do a lot more work to support the proliferation of different Android devices with different screen resolutions soon, but for now you should be seeing exactly what the Galaxy Tab users see, who have the same resolution.

followtheflow   March 30th, 2011 9:57p.m.

My bad, I had read the agent wrong and actually is "NookColor": Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.3.3; en-gb; NookColor Build/GRI40) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1

nick   March 31st, 2011 8:39p.m.

Ah, okay. I'll make that change and you should get the tablet layout. I will eventually work on making a better layout for that resolution, but not quite yet.

Just wanted to chime in with another vote for Nook optimization. Using stock android browser on 2.3/CM7, there's no difference for me between the two links above (android vs. android tablet). The sketchpad fills about half the screen area, so it's functional, but it would be nice to have it full screen (which has happened a few random times, I assume because you've been tinkering with the code). Cheers!

nick   April 13th, 2011 7:48a.m.

Daybird, I fixed the problem that was making the android=true and android=true&tablet=true links different for the Nook--it's using the tablet=true code either way for you now, based on your User Agent String. I don't know what would have made the Flash fill the full screen except for some strange zooming configuration.

Thanks for letting me know your usage. I'll be looking forward to getting some time to make a better layout.
