From Wired on line:

"That iPhone 4S really sucks, huh? Not only did Apple sell 37 million iPhones in the last three months, the “disappointing” iPhone also outsold Android at Verizon."

No need to proselytize unless people are seeking advice... and then within the same thread would probably be most effective.

Dennis   January 25th, 2012 8:50p.m.

proselytize?

Catherine :)   January 26th, 2012 10:18a.m.

Win over people/ convert them.

I don't think the android/iPhone debate belongs on the skritter forum unless it is about how well skritter actually works on them.

icebear   January 26th, 2012 12:39p.m.

Exactly.

Dennis   January 26th, 2012 1:34p.m.

I was not proselytizing (I know what it means, btw). The excerpt from a piece in "Wired" was a statement of fact. More iPhones is good for Skritter. Jeez.

Jeez - An expression of minor exasperation or annoyance

icebear   January 26th, 2012 2:42p.m.

Non sequitur.

Dennis   January 27th, 2012 12:20p.m.

From "Ars Technica":

"AT&T sold 9.4 million smartphones in the fourth quarter of 2011, but 7.6 million of which were iPhones, the company reported today. According to those numbers, the iPhone made up a whopping 80 percent of AT&T's smartphone sales for the quarter, and 66 percent of all postpaid phones sold through AT&T. "

valymer   January 27th, 2012 2:52p.m.

Sales numbers may be skewed due to this interesting consumer phenomenon:

Dennis   January 27th, 2012 5:19p.m.

I agree. I'm not trying to imply that the numbers mean the iPhone is better. I don't own one. Mine is the most basic, but I do own an iPod Touch. ;-> It does suggest that as much as one might wish, the Android is not such a great challenge to the iPhone.

There are also other things to think about like the ecology that evolves around a phone. Think applications and how the phone interfaces with other devices.

Jose   February 1st, 2012 2:33a.m.

I agree with Catherine, this debate probably does not belong to this forum.

I own an Android (well, several indeed) and I'd prefer Skritter to work well in my devices (imho currently it's unusable) but I understand iPhone is the number one platform for getting new users (in other words, money).

What I'm worried is about PC version (current) vs iPhone... As development focus is the iPhone platform, the current version (the one I really care), seems to have come to a halt or even slightly getting worse (for months the bug on redrawing on linux flash was really annoying). Key features for learning like example sentences are still not implemented for Japanese, for example. Of course, as user I care about new features for learning not more users :)

Antimacassar   February 1st, 2012 3:09a.m.

@Jose

Hear hear!

dbkluck   February 1st, 2012 9:10a.m.

Well said, Jose, I've been thinking the same thing, I've just been trying to hold my tongue because I know how hard the Skritter guys work and I don't want to seem ungrateful. But as a user who will benefit not at all from the iPhone app, it's been really tough to be constantly reminded of how awesome the app is going to be and how much more important it is than any other project, including improvements to the core product that would benefit everyone like overhauling the example sentence system.* Although my hatred of Apple is well documented, I daresay I'm looking forward to the release of the iPhone app with much more anticipation than any iOS user.

* I don't think I can fairly complain about the Linux redraw thing--it's annoying, but Linux users are a much smaller fraction of the Skritter community than (future) iPhone users, so it'd be hypocritical to whine about iOS monopolizing developers' time while wanting to monopolize it myself.

Dennis   February 2nd, 2012 6:25p.m.

The censors are out. I can't find the terms of use that detail what can and cannot be posted.

valymer   February 2nd, 2012 6:34p.m.

Yeah, I think it's a bad idea to not have the forum subdivided into categories. But what do I know.

icebear   February 3rd, 2012 3:21a.m.

Vocal minority.

valymer   February 3rd, 2012 4:54a.m.

Well, it would certainly keep the vocal majority from complaining so much.

雅各   February 3rd, 2012 5:15a.m.

I don't think there are any guidelines on what can or can't be discussed on the Skritter forum. And even if there were, there doesn't seem to be any sort of moderation of any form (:

icebear   February 3rd, 2012 5:23a.m.

I just don't understand the indignant tone in some of the posts. No one's Skritter subscription covers a guarantee of future mobile development - it covers adding new words to study on the web app. Everything else is above and beyond reasonable expectations.

I'm pretty sure the Skritter guys have acknowledged, for some time now, that they are engaged full-on with the iOS development. Android could come after that, but it seems unreasonable to do anything for the moment but politely voice that you'd like them to work on the Android or webapp afterwards. *To me* the entitled attitude is bothersome.

I'm especially baffled by the "censors" comment.

nick   February 3rd, 2012 8:35a.m.

We don't have any explicit policies on what goes and what doesn't go in the forum. We've been able to get away with it so far, which is awesome and a credit to y'all's courtesy and intelligence. Nice work, awesome users! I'd like to keep on keeping things chill, too, with your help.

We do moderate the forum, actually, but there's hardly ever any need to do so. Every now and then a spam gets through or someone manages to double post. We only delete inappropriate comments a few times a year, it seems.

Anyway, feel free to talk about iOS vs. Android, how you see the purpose of this forum, where you wish we'd spend our development efforts, and what's frustrating you with Skritter--in addition to the posts about learning Chinese and Japanese. Just keep it polite. And for the less-topical topics, continue old threads where possible instead of starting new ones.

This forum is now read only. Please go to Skritter Discourse Forum instead to start a new conversation!
