Duplicate Words in Custom Lists

Janerl   September 17th, 2011 11:47a.m.

I have to admit that I didn't have much experience with making lists before the overhaul, and only a limited amount even after, but I have a quick question.

When adding words to a list through the "Edit This Section," it warns you about duplicates in the section when you try to "Save Changes." Just to check, if you add words with Quick Add, the only way to check for dupes is to go back and hit "Save Changes" for each section, right? (Easy enough.)

Also, I can't remember if it used to do this or not, but is there a way for it to check duplicates across the whole list instead of only the section?

(I know it doesn't make any difference when you're actually studying the list to have duplicates, but for the sake of a clean list...)

We're going to change Quick Add to skip duplicates much more of the time. It'll only add one copy of the word in the same batch. Also, it won't add any copies by default if the word is already in My Words or has been Quick Added before. (You'll be able to override this.)

You could still end up with duplicates if you'd built the list without Quick Add and then added to it with Quick Add. If you want to do that and still want a totally clean list, then your method is good enough on a per-section level.

To look for duplicates across the whole list, I guess you could export the list, sort all the lines, and look for duplicates that way, then manually removing them from their sections after you found them. It's not well supported.

Ah, I see.

I like that it will recognize if a word is already in My Words. I used to go through and delete those words with a green dot after I finished making a section.

Looking forward to the implementation of that, and thank you very much for your help!
