I would be curious what approaches they were taking, so that we don't make the same mistaks :)

I'll try and put things as simple as possible, if you have any questions please let me know.

The first usage that students generally encounter is using "的" to indicate possession (loose concept). For example:

我的車/ 我的车 (my car)
他的手機/ 他的手机 (their cellphone)

even 他的哥哥 (His brother)

The second is used to modify nouns with adjectival phrases.

超帥的男生/ 超帅的男生 (a super handsome guy)
藍色的衣服/ 蓝色的衣服 (blue clothing)

Similarly, you can attach huge phrase to nouns using 的 as well. Like this,

那個明天要跟我們一起去的女生/ 那个明天要跟我们一起去的女生 ( It's that girl who wants to go out with us tomorrow)

Now for 得 (which I'm guess is where some of the problems are coming from). 得, typically is used after verbs or complements to describe an action or indicate degree. Let's take the following examples

老師說得很慢/ 老师说得很慢 (the teacher spoke slowly)

Here we have the degree modifier (很慢) being used to describe the verb (说) where 得 links them together. Often times you will see this (得) used in a verb reduplication pattern that is good to commit to memory, for example:

他學中文學得很好/ 他学中文学得很好 (He is really good at studying Chinese).

There are more usages, but I think these should be a good starting point.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if you want to try out a few sentences. I'd be more than happy to help.

Jake

Also, a great reference page is AllSetLearning's Grammar Wiki:
