Looks like the Great Firewall or something like it is preventing you from completely loading www.skritter.com because it is hosted on Google App Engine, which is periodically blocked. Try instead our mirror:

legacy.skritter.cn

This might also be caused by an internet filter, such as SafeEyes. If you have such a filter installed, try adding appspot.com to the list of allowed domains.

Sound Elements - new lists 22 Sept 2010 - suit beginners

I have just published some lists of sound elements (characters that are frequently used in others for their sound rather than their meaning). They are called Sound Elements 1 and 2.

I find sound elements are often useful in mnemonics, even when (or maybe especially when) there's no obvious connection with the meaning. One example from the traditional side:

雚 can mean "heron" and 見 can mean "see", so one mnemonic for 觀 is "a heron is watching".
