Fonts - definitions

bennyboyk   November 16th, 2011 9:55a.m.

Is it me or did the font on reviewing definitions change today? Or may be my laptop. It looks like a computer type face where as before it was more of a brush-stroke handwritten font...

nick   November 16th, 2011 11:27a.m.

It might have; it depends on a number of things, including which fonts are installed on your computer. Try downloading the font from this link, if you haven't already:

mcfarljw   November 16th, 2011 8:19p.m.

Mine changed randomly too today. If it's of any coincidence.

Roland   November 16th, 2011 8:37p.m.

Just now, I was asked for a refresh - code update. After this, my font also changed, same as what bennyboyk said. Doesn't look nice any longer.

GrandPoohBlah   November 16th, 2011 9:11p.m.

I, too, have noticed this change of font.

Roland   November 16th, 2011 10:52p.m.

I use HP w185 monitors, 18.5 inch, Google Chrome, some time ago, I have downloaded and installed KaiTi, which looked very nice on the monitor. Now it seems, that there is a different font used, which has quite thick, bold strokes and characters with many strokes are sometimes even hard to recognize.

mcfarljw   November 16th, 2011 11:41p.m.

The font it switched to reminds me of Ariel Unicode MS.

scott   November 17th, 2011 10:23a.m.

I can't find anything different in the code between the two versions that would change the font of anything. The October release is still live, though, if you guys would check it out and see if using it brings back the old fonts:

Ignore the warnings about encryption; that's just because or SSL certificate is only set up for *.skritter.com and *.skritter.cn, but it's encrypted either way.

Scott, can't access it from China. I'm now at home at a different PC, it has a HP LE1901 (19 inch), the rendering is somehow better, not always the thick bold strokes, but the font is also changed.

bennyboyk   November 17th, 2011 10:53a.m.

Scott, FYI fonts on the regular site are still using this new "Arial" style typeface, however just using the link you posted (http://3-10.latest.write-way.appspot.com/ ) I am back to the old fonts

nick   November 17th, 2011 11:09a.m.

It might have something to do with our switch of Flash compiler versions. I will investigate further.

nick   November 18th, 2011 12:21p.m.

Tried the different browser/Flash Player version/OS combinations, but no dice. I've added some logging for y'all's accounts on the beta site to see what fonts are being listed as available and which are being chosen.

mcfarljw   November 18th, 2011 9:12p.m.

I know it's been identified that there is a font problem, but look how ugly this character is!

GrandPoohBlah   November 20th, 2011 3:53a.m.

oh dear. That's not what my font looks like, thankfully.

nick   November 21st, 2011 1:07p.m.

Are y'all running Windows XP by any chance?

jcardenio   November 21st, 2011 7:40p.m.

It also happened to me on a windows XP machine. As I recall, there was also a windows update just before the change in font. Not sure if it's related...

mcfarljw   November 21st, 2011 9:17p.m.

I didn't notice it for about two days and then today it really stuck out as being bad today. I already have the highest font pack installed, as listed by this site.

I'm running a Windows 7 Ultimate, so I don't think it's related to XP. I haven't noticed any ugly fonts on my mobile device.

nick   November 22nd, 2011 10:19a.m.

For those who have commented on this thread: please practice on the beta site (at least for more than two minutes) so that my debugging font logging can give me a snapshot of what's going on with the fonts that are being chosen.

nick   November 30th, 2011 10:47a.m.

I might have fixed this for one user on beta, but I'm not sure, so please go there and try it out.

mcfarljw   December 1st, 2011 12:04a.m.

It looks pretty again on the beta. I just logged about two minutes of practice with it.

nick   December 1st, 2011 9:26a.m.

Great! You want to know what the fix was?

The font lists itself as 楷体 instead of KaiTi. When I see this, I just ask for KaiTi anyway (which is not listed as a valid font), and then it works.

mcfarljw   December 1st, 2011 11:07p.m.

haha you have to love those not documented trial and error fixes
