Possible bug

truemystic   May 3rd, 2013 6:17a.m.

Hi there. First, thanks for producing such an incredible app. I feel like my Chinese has come on immensely since I started using Skritter and it's just way ahead of anything else I've managed to find out there.

That said, I do have one slight issue. Since I changed the settings so that my list would add characters in words as well, I seem to have the following issue. If a word appears with a new characte in it and I put in a mnemonic for that character when it is contained in the word, when Skritter next shows me that character on its own, it deletes my mnemonic - which is quite annoying! Any ideas how to stop this? I quite enjoy adding characters in words as well as I think it helps me remember things more thoroughly, so would prefer not to turn off that setting if possible.

Thanks,
Nick

I should say I've also been getting the "Account Data Corrupt" message every half hour or so since changing that setting and also since downloading the additional sounds, but I haven't noticed any problems apart from this one.

Hmm, that doesn't sound good. Can you give me a couple examples of characters and words where you added a mnemonic for the character?

truemystic   May 3rd, 2013 3:10p.m.

Can't remember now, will post some examples when it happens again.

truemystic   May 3rd, 2013 5:38p.m.

Ok it just happened with 技 and 术.

nick   May 3rd, 2013 10:19p.m.

Checking it out, and the mnemonics are definitely saved to the site. I assume they do come up again if you see that character within the word on the app?

When you see the character by itself and it doesn't have the mnemonic you put in--how long after you made the mnemonic is that? Same day, or longer?

truemystic   May 4th, 2013 2:21a.m.

It is the next time I see it - usually straight after I've seen the character in the word it then shows me the character on its own (because of the setting presumably). Will see what happens the next time they come up.

truemystic   May 4th, 2013 2:27a.m.

It just came up again - still missing the mnemonic (I'm using on my iPhone). I can see it on the website but for some reason it's not making the connection. Will try deleting my local data and see if that changes things.

truemystic   May 4th, 2013 5:33a.m.

Yes clearing local data restored my mnemonics. Will do that for now!

nick   May 4th, 2013 11:12p.m.

Not the greatest workaround! Can you do me a favor and, next time you see one of these characters that is missing its mnemonic, just force quit the app and restart it. You should get back to that character in one or two prompts. Does it still miss the mnemonic then?

truemystic   May 5th, 2013 3:10a.m.

Will do.

truemystic   May 5th, 2013 4:54a.m.

That doesn't work unfortunately. I asked the app to compare with the server and it reported there were several mismatches - is there any way to get it to line up? Force sync doesn't seem to make a difference.

nick   May 6th, 2013 2:17p.m.

Okay, thanks for the info.

If you want the sync report to line up, you can do a Clear Local Data from the account settings, which will make it line up until some bug we haven't found yet makes it show a mismatch again. (You're already doing this, though.)

Usually the mismatches are very small and cosmetic, but it could be that there's a larger problem causing both these mnemonic vanishes and the mismatches. We'll check it out.

truemystic   May 7th, 2013 2:34a.m.

Great, thanks Nick. If it's any help, the problem started after I changed the settings and downloaded the extra sounds on a fairly unreliable internet connection, so don't know if something could have gone wrong there. Still it's only a minor issue in what is otherwise an extremely addictive and useful app!

nick   May 8th, 2013 11:49p.m.

I don't think downloading extra sounds would have any effect, but an unreliable internet connection in general when studying might. (Seems unlikely that it would throw errors except during sync, though, as opposed to causing mismatched data to get into the device--there are checksums for that.)

dbkluck   May 9th, 2013 10:42a.m.

Can't help but notice that this problem has its roots in a single character / multi-character issue that sounds vaguely similar to what I am experiencing with the example sentences; might be worth looking at. I don't use the mnemonics so I can't say much about this specific problem.

ddapore99   May 12th, 2013 7:11p.m.

This sounds a lot like the bug I keep getting told doesn't exist.

truemystic   May 14th, 2013 7:57a.m.

I've now had quite a bit of experience with this bug and it seems to me that after testing me on the new character writing for a two-character word, the program seems to line up those two characters to test me on the definition shortly afterwards (usually immediately after). As soon as it tests me on the definition it deletes the mnemonic I input the first time round and I can't get the mnemonic back until I clear local data. Is there a way of tweaking the program so that it doesn't test me on the new character definition for an hour or so (which might be enough to get the mnemonic synced properly)? It's a bit pointless testing me on the definition of a new character I've seen 5 seconds before anyway ...

truemystic   May 14th, 2013 7:58a.m.

I should also say some (thankfully rather few) mnemonics have just vanished into the ether, never to return - possibly because the program didn't sync properly with the server before I cleared local data.

skritter sucks, jks is good

ddapore99   May 15th, 2013 9:07p.m.

What does jks stand for? I don't think Skritter sucks but I do think it still has some very hard to find but very serious bugs. I don't like that new features are on the way while the old features still have bugs in them. Until they at least figure out what is causing the bug I will be afraid of loosing my work every time I use Skritter. Truemystic I am sorry to say it happens with single characters and it happens without making edits while using skritter too.

truemystic   May 18th, 2013 3:07a.m.

It's now saying "Account Data Corrupt" and exiting every couple of minutes. If I delete the app from my phone and reinstall it will that do any harm?

lechuan   May 18th, 2013 9:40a.m.

No harm caused by deleting and reinstalling. You will be saved up to whenever your last sync was.

nick   August 24th, 2013 9:16p.m.

I've dug in and improved the way that these kinds of edits are handled, so hopefully in the next app release, the issue will be fixed.
