I'm hoping someone who is computer savvy can help me block some websites , so that I can't go to them.

I've already blocked the sites on Internet explorer, but I also use Google Chrome, and I no matter what I tried, I couldn't block the sites, because I still have access to them.

This is what I did:
1. opened Google Chrome
2. clicked on the wrench at the top right of the screen.
3. went to options
4. went to "under the hood"
5. clicked on "change proxy settings"
6. went to "security" tab
7. went to "restricted sites"
8. clicked on "sites"
9. typed in the website addresses
10. clicked "close"
11. clicked "ok"

And after all of that, nothing has changed at all. I still have full access to the sites.

If someone can point out what else I should do, I would really appreciate it. I'm not computer savvy, so I'm looking for a simple, and easy way to block a few sites

Basically what you want to do is map the sites you don't like to something really really annoying. Maybe map them to rickroll on youtube, or barbie.com :P This works at the operating system level so it works cross browser and everything.

Step by step guide:

or just google "windows host file tutorial" or the like.

way way way too complicated. There isn't an easier way to do it, huh ?

try finding a girlfriend?! (joking mate!)

o   April 16th, 2011 11:13a.m.

Try to change your way of thinking and simply stop visiting the sites distracting you.

Byzanti   April 16th, 2011 12:08p.m.

It's possible to edit the hosts file to stop you visiting particular sites, but not sure how much a tech solution will help you here :p

Lawnmower16   April 16th, 2011 1:19p.m.

Do you want to learn your language or not? Keep reminding yourself why it is important to you to stay on Skritter and perfect your language skills. It just takes self control.

Or, better yet, find another way of learning. If you don't like Skritter, do something else. Skritter is perfect for me because it turns language learning into what is essentially a video game. But if this isn't your thing, then you should look for other methods instead of paying for your own boredom.

"Boredom means “stop doing this and start doing something else”. Boredom is pain. You don’t keep your hand on the hot stove because it “builds character”, you take it away before you really hurt yourself."

Here is a Chrome extenshion that is perfect for you.

Bohan   April 16th, 2011 7:46p.m.

@ddapore99 thanks a lot for that link !! I installed the extension. The only thing I don't like about it is that it will still allow me to access blocked sites for one minute per day. (The default was 10 minutes a day. I tried to adjust that to zero minutes a day, but it said I can't have "zero or less", so I made it one minute, because seconds weren't allowed)

Bohan   April 16th, 2011 7:49p.m.

@Lawnmower16 I appreciate the advice

@歐立文 Thanks, I'll try. It's not easy though, when you have an addiction

@Neil hahahaha :)

Nicki   April 16th, 2011 8:50p.m.

Isn't anybody else curious about what sites he's addicted to or are we all too afraid to ask?

Bohan   April 16th, 2011 9:30p.m.

@Nicki hahah, it's something very stupid, and embarrassing. I don't even like it , but I've somehow managed to get hooked on it. I've tried to quit a bunch of times.

Hopefully this will be the time i really stop !!
Wish me luck !!!!

podster   April 16th, 2011 11:17p.m.

Another argument for the offline mode. I think we are all getting addicted to "multitasking" I believe I need to spend more time with books to complement on line time studying, but having trouble "getting around to it" probably because of spending too much time on other timewasters.

Good luck, Bohan.

Bohan, on iPod   April 16th, 2011 11:40p.m.

@ podster. Yeah, an offline mode like the one Nick mentioned for mobile devices would be great. Thanks a lot !!! So far, so good.

ddapore99   April 17th, 2011 1:08a.m.

Bohan, use the nuclear option and it will only allow you to use sites you approve. You'll have no grace period on unapproved sites.

Bohan   April 17th, 2011 1:37a.m.

@ddapore99 cool, good stuff. I just nuked the blocked sites for 400 hours. I haven't ever been able to go that long, so I think if I can do that, I might be able to go forever (knock on wood) without visiting those sites.

All I need to do to access the sites on Explorer is type in a password that I created, but up until now, knowing that I went through the trouble to do that has stopped me from typing in the password to get to the sites. I'm also trying to only use Chrome, because with Chrome I won't be able to get on the sites, and it's also a much faster browser.

Nicki   April 17th, 2011 2:27a.m.

@ podster YES + 1 on offline for this and many more reasons :)

@ Bohan good luck with that!

Bohan   April 17th, 2011 2:49a.m.

@Nicki thanks for the support !! I plan on checking out your blog very soon. I've already put it in my favorites :)

Ekrem   April 17th, 2011 3:01a.m.

Bohan, you could also install a free parental lock type of software to block those unwanted sites, or alternatively, my favourite method, is to block it from the modem/router which most current routers allow these days.

This method is preferable because no software (which could potentially slow down your computer) is required to be installed.

Bohan   April 17th, 2011 3:13a.m.

@Ekrem thanks for that tip! I would try doing that, if I were more computer/technically savvy. I didn't begin to use computers until mid-way through college, and what you described is way over my head. But, again, thanks !!

Nicki   April 17th, 2011 9:46p.m.

@ Bohan wow thanks let me know what you think of it :)

Bohan   April 20th, 2011 2:16a.m.

Excellent. I bet you are seeing a steeper slope on your progress curve.
