different numbers of items due

jww1066   January 16th, 2014 10:35p.m.

In iOS the app is synced and says I have 434 items due. The web page says I have 1002 items due. What gives?

JamesThompson   January 17th, 2014 5:27a.m.

I have also noticed a difference between the iOS app and the website numbers. If you turn-off-turn-on your iOS device the numbers usually sync more accurately (in my experience.)

However, the next day I always find the numbers are again not the same.

jww1066   January 17th, 2014 7:23a.m.

Hmmm, I cycled power and there's still a significant difference (762 vs. 1123).

Stuart   January 17th, 2014 7:56a.m.

Have you tried clearing the data in the iOS app and syncing from scratch?

jww1066   January 17th, 2014 11:14a.m.

That sounds worth trying. How do I do that?

Stuart   January 17th, 2014 11:39a.m.

Go into the app settings and then select "account" from the menu at the bottom. Then scroll down and the last option should be to "Clear Local Data".

jww1066   January 17th, 2014 1:09p.m.

Thanks, that fixed it. But what's worrisome is the idea that I had to do this at all. Does it mean I have been studying the wrong items on iOS?

Stuart   January 17th, 2014 8:00p.m.

I'm not sure, it seems a discrepancy building up between the iOS app and the web version is inevitable although mine has only ever been out by a few dozen items at most. Not sure how yours managed to become so big!

JamesThompson   January 17th, 2014 11:42p.m.

Just thought I'd say that I cleared the local data and reloaded the iOS app; now the iOS app and website numbers are the same.

jww1066   January 18th, 2014 4:55p.m.

One day after clearing local data they're already off by quite a bit - 1121 on iOS, 1278 on the web page.

克里斯   January 18th, 2014 5:01p.m.

Same here. I also got the impression that the iOS app reduces the 'items due' number too quickly – two at a time sometimes.

Stuart   January 19th, 2014 12:07a.m.

I don't suppose it's possible that the items are not really syncing properly? Since my wifi connection at work is atrociously unreliable I always "force sync" to make sure it's synced. If I don't do that then even after syncing and getting the green arrow, it will still say there are "items to sync" on the Sync Status page. Sometimes I even have to force sync about a dozen times before it finally shows zero "items to sync".

Although if you have a decent network connection I wouldn't imagine this would be a problem.

Stuart   January 19th, 2014 12:15a.m.

I should clarify that when this problem occurs, the "Items to Sync" value on the Sync Status page will be zero, but only after hitting "force sync" does it change to show the real value. So even after looking at the Sync Status page it could be easy to think all your items are synced when they're really not.

克里斯   January 19th, 2014 12:25a.m.

My wifi is rather stable and fast enough. I just opened the app and found 3 items due. After force sync there are 36. In the web app there are 150. Multiple forced syncs won't change anything.

DependableSkeleton   January 19th, 2014 8:53a.m.

I find that the app can be slow to update the "due" list while I'm in study mode. I regularly go back to the main menu, click Advanced Study, and then keep all of the usual study options selected. This forces the app to recalculate a bit and then my Due count always jumps up. This is pretty fast, but I think that I always lose progress on the last couple items that I studied (i.e. my most recent results don't get saved). When those items come up again I must remember how I did on them the first time. Because of this, I usually wait until I get several items correct in a row before I do this procedure.

jww1066   January 19th, 2014 11:00p.m.

I think in my case what happened was that I added a lot of words using the bulk add feature of the iOS app, and then something went wrong when it tried to sync after adding all those words. Then when I deleted the local data and it synced it started showing me those items all of a sudden. I say this because I haven't added anything new in a week or so, but after deleting local data I saw many, many new items.

cinnamonfern   January 20th, 2014 12:58p.m.

Yep - I have the same problem. I'm not sure if it is because I force added words in the App, but many of them didn't show up for the initial writing. (And the program says I have no words due when I actually had over 400.) When I go into the website all the new words show up in the vocab lists as added even though I've never seen them. Force syncing in the app did not work to update the items due. Now I'm trying to reload the initial data, but it is really annoying because I have over 55000 items to sync, so it takes a really long time.

nick   January 23rd, 2014 12:07p.m.

jww1066, cinnamonfern–is it possible to remove and then re-add the list from whence came most of the new force-added items so that they are re-added one by one? I wonder if they weren't all fully added, so when the iOS app goes to count how many are due, it starts to locally skip all the ones that weren't complete. The web version may not be able to notice this kind of problem until you actually go to study the unstudiable words.

cinnamonfern   January 28th, 2014 11:56p.m.

So today I tried reloading my two biggest recent lists. This caused the count on both the web and in the iOS app to reset. Now they are only off by one, so I guess there is one more problem list out there. When I force added words today, I think they showed up in the iOS app with no problem, however that was before I reloaded the lists so I don't know what effect that had on the count discrepancy. I'll try again tomorrow to see if it causes the difference in the count to increase again.

穆安   January 29th, 2014 2:19a.m.

I agree with 克里斯's comment. The count goes down too fast.

Also the progress stats seem to be off, I studied 10 words, each consisting of two characters, but the study count jumped from 288 to 314... And I have the feeling that these numbers are further off with more studying done...

jww1066   January 29th, 2014 8:31a.m.

@nick is it a good idea to do that when I have many items due? I have a big backlog and I suppose maybe I should get it down to zero before I fiddle around with removing and adding items, no?

nick   January 31st, 2014 3:25p.m.

With a big backlog, it probably doesn't matter much if a few of the lists are out of sync, since there are plenty of good reviews to due. It's more important when you get down towards 0 and there are some reviews missing that should be done but aren't being loaded.

jww1066   February 3rd, 2014 8:32a.m.

@nick I removed and then re-added all my lists. Now I have a backlog of 4 items rather than the 2000 or so I had due before. What happened to all my due items? I thought it was supposed to preserve my progress and pick up where I left off.

nick   February 3rd, 2014 11:32p.m.

It will add them back in quickly as it goes to add a new word from your list and realizes that all of the words are already added. Each new word added from a list should actually be all the old words added from that list (plus one new one).

jww1066   February 19th, 2014 7:51a.m.

@nick Even after deleting and re-adding, I am seeing large discrepancies in the number of items due. This morning for example the iOS app said I had six items due and the web page said 63. After deleting local data and re-syncing the iOS app now says I have 56 items due.

Can you point me at some of the words that try to show up in the web that the iOS app is skipping? It's possible that that difference is the number of words that are not studiable in the system (because of incomplete data or something).

Catherine :)   March 13th, 2014 6:49p.m.

I've had the same problem lately when I started using advanced study to manually work my way much after through a new list. The website still has the 2,000 odd reviews I expect, but the iOS app only has what I'd expect from that new list. I'll try deleting my local data and see if that helps. Also I don't ever study on the website if that makes a difference.
