Looks like the Great Firewall or something like it is preventing you from completely loading www.skritter.com because it is hosted on Google App Engine, which is periodically blocked. Try instead our mirror:

legacy.skritter.cn

This might also be caused by an internet filter, such as SafeEyes. If you have such a filter installed, try adding appspot.com to the list of allowed domains.

can't connect to skritter.com

wb   May 6th, 2011 7:30a.m.

Yesterday for some time and right now I can't connect to the .com domain from Germany. .cn works fine...anyone else having problems?

Phoboss   May 6th, 2011 7:44a.m.

the problem exists for 4 hours...

Mandarinboy   May 6th, 2011 8:02a.m.

Have had the same problem with both addresses today. I finally could log in on the .cn address to get some work done.

wb   May 6th, 2011 9:18a.m.

now both domains work again for me again...

kaysik   May 6th, 2011 11:01a.m.

I had it earlier but it seems to be working now ... but what do I need sleep for when I can win a mug :D

石磊   May 6th, 2011 11:52a.m.

This is an intermittent but serious problem for me here in the UK too.
It has happened every week or so since I started to use scritter a couple of months ago.
I was unable to use either domain for most of yesterday - very frustrating indeed as I also want to win a mug :D
Do you need to put some more coins into the internet electricity meter?

nick   May 6th, 2011 4:45p.m.

I'm not sure exactly where the problem is; we're not getting any of our usual downtime reports firing. Can y'all do me a favor and bookmark this link?
http://live.latest.skrit.appspot.com/server_status
If you can access this page while skritter.com or skritter.cn is down, then the problem lies with our intermediate web hosts. If not, then it's a problem on Google App Engine's end. It would be very helpful if you could email me (nick@skritter) if you have problems, letting me know which sites you can and can't access, and from where.

I've added a day to each of your accounts to help make up for the downtime. Sorry about this!

wb   May 6th, 2011 4:49p.m.

yeah I checked the server status today, no problem, and everything seemed to work fine with the .cn domain...

podster   May 6th, 2011 8:17p.m.

I'll be Skrittering late into the night to stay in the running. I was unable to connect this morning.

Byzanti   May 7th, 2011 5:19a.m.

Nick, last time it wasn't an app engine problem. I had Skritter running fine on the practice page. It was only when I clicked elsewhere (new window) the .com pages wouldn't load anymore. (I then switched to .cn).

Randy   May 7th, 2011 10:16a.m.

I think that was the same morning that I could not log on. I had no problem getting the login prompt. When I entered my login info, it paused for quite a while, and then I got the message from Windows that "This page cannot be displayed."

junglegirl   May 9th, 2011 5:09a.m.

Could I get an extra day too? I did email you during the down time the other day but didn't get a reply.

Antimacassar   May 9th, 2011 5:58a.m.

There seemed to be some problem with the internet in China today (and the other day). I live in China, and if I can't connect to Skritter I cant connect to anything outside China either (e.g. Baidu is ok but google doesnt work or qq works but msn doesnt)...could be just me though :S

nick   May 9th, 2011 12:11p.m.

junglegirl, of course. I didn't get your email, though. Did you send it from the contact page, or send it to nick@skritter.com?

We're working on this bug, but still haven't figured it out yet. Will let y'all know when we've got something.

junglegirl   May 10th, 2011 5:05a.m.

I just had a look; turns out I sent the email to george@skritter.com. It was the first address I came across looking through old newsletters and such. Are you the preferred contact point for this kind of thing?

Antimacassar   May 10th, 2011 6:07a.m.

anyone else having problems connecting at the mo?

Byzanti   May 10th, 2011 6:14a.m.

Nope!

scott   May 10th, 2011 8:48a.m.

@Antimacassar: are you having troubles with www.skritter.com or www.skritter.cn? Or do they act the same way for you? We set it up so that if you try to connect to www.skritter.com, it shows a message directing you to www.skritter.cn if www.skritter.com is inaccessible for you, usually because of the great firewall.

scott   May 10th, 2011 8:59a.m.

One other possibility is it's related to our DNS. It's a long shot but worth checking. Next time www.skritter.com is inaccessible, try going to http://74.207.246.92/ . That's the direct IP address that the domain www.skritter.com is pointing to. It should show you the Skritter front page.

nick   May 12th, 2011 1:38p.m.

junglegirl, I see--you caught George while he was traveling to give a talk. Normally he would take care of you, too. But you can feel free to email any of us for this stuff. Scott is taking the lead on diagnosing this particular server connection issue.

even the strongvpn connection has been bad, it's the fate of countries with regimes, they'll get more and more tough but so will the citizens, wait 10-30 years and things will boil over, it's quite predictable, unless inside the cpc a miracle takes place...

古懷玉   May 31st, 2011 4:34p.m.

Hello.

I have been experiencing log-in problems all day today. I can't log into Skritter.com. Skritter.cn still works, but it is rather slow. :-/ I tried to connect to http://74.207.246.92/, as Scott suggested and it worked. So I guess the problem is not on my end of the line?

scott   June 1st, 2011 9:37a.m.

We did a migration to a new server for www.skritter.com and had a misconfiguration. That's been fixed though, does it work for you now?

古懷玉   June 2nd, 2011 8:21a.m.

Everything works fine. Thanks. :-)

wb   June 11th, 2011 3:23a.m.

so right now, the ip works, .cn works, .com gets a time out...last time firefox immediately said: doesn't exist, this time it's trying to connect for a minute or so, saying it's taking too long to respond...from Germany

so I had to log in, because my post looked like spam...lol

nick   June 12th, 2011 4:15p.m.

Yeah, our monitoring tools picked up a brief outage last night. We're looking into that one.

nick   June 13th, 2011 12:35p.m.

Linode says it was a large-scale DDoS on one of the servers in the same facility, which they heroically repelled slightly after the initial onslaught. So, no more mystery there.
