Wéi 囗 kǒu 口 are similar

I am comparing these two words in different fonts to learn how to distinguish them.

Strangely when I past them into translate.google.com then Wéi is translated as IMPORTS.

I'm not even sure Wei is a real character, I thought it was a radical (although Baidu's dictionary gives it an entry).

then check 囗

(for some reason the direct wouldn't work so had to use this method)

If it is, the chances of you ever actually having to use it or to see it must be virtually zero. Kou on the other hand is extremely common.

Thanks Antimacassar! That makes a lot of sense to me. The first vocabulary list I chose in Skritter was RADICALS so that is why I am offered many radicals as I study.

As far as I know the main difference is that wei is used as an enclosure for things, whereas kou can't have things inside it. And kou is of course a character in itself, whereas I don't think wei is.

My avatar is just wei around 东.
