Missing revised words from already learnt lists

Antimacassar   October 26th, 2011 4:52a.m.

I am presently going through the list called Chinese Illustrated Dictionary and I noticed that a word that I had previously learnt there was recently revised. The revision in question was from 鲶鱼 to 鲇鱼 (an essential word to know, I'm sure you'll agree :P).

Apart from the fact that (as far as I can tell) this is a meaningless revision (Nciku says both entries are OK) I also noticed that the new entry had been left unstudied (I don't know whether the old one is still in my database or not?!).

But the point is that if lists that we have already finished learning are modified in some way, the new words don't seem to be automatically re-added which is kinda annoying. I hope that some of the other lists that I have 'finished' don't have this problem!? Is there any way to fix/improve this?

Usually, we'll only change a list like that if there is a mistake in it. Most mistakes happened when someone typed in a word with the same pinyin. In that case, we figured that either the old word is common, in which case you might already have that common old typo'd word from another list, or it's rare, in which case you probably don't want to study it (especially if the new word is common).

So we automatically make the change, but then provide you with the notification to check it out in case you decide to re-add the word. (Which should be quick to do from looking at the word popup for the word which was changed.)

In this case, I changed it because this is one of those rare characters where a traditional character maps to two simplified characters, so we can't fully support the 鲶鱼 variant (because the traditional, 鯰, we have mapped to 鲇 instead of 鲶). Anyone studying the list in traditional would thus get 鲶鱼 as the simplified and traditional form, which is no good.

Anyway, the expected behavior in this case is for 鲶鱼 to be deactivated (unless it's in another of your lists), and for 鲇鱼 to be... added somehow, maybe not right away--maybe we'll have to ask Scott.

ok thanks!

In this scenario, the list goes back to that section only after you've finished studying the rest of the list (so it doesn't interrupt your work, and you're not abruptly shifted back to an earlier section). I checked and it's set to do that, so the auto-update system is working as intended.

So when you finish that textbook list, the list will automatically go back to the Food section and add the whole thing, which includes 鲇鱼, and then 鲇鱼 will be marked as added from "Chinese Illustrated Dictionary", and be included when you study that list by itself.

If you want to short circuit that, then change the list settings to start from that section and it will add 鲇鱼 next, rather than waiting until you've finished the whole list.
