知道 - mistake in pinyin?

Wodzu   August 24th, 2012 4:52p.m.

Hello.

Today I've tried add to my list 知道 - "zhi1dao4" but skirtter couldn't find it. However skritter finds zhi1dao5

here is a deffinition for this word:

http://www.mdbg.net/chindict/chindict.php?page=worddict&wdrst=0&wdqb=zhidao

it shows a forth tone for "dao". Is this a mistake in skirtter database?

道 is fourth tone by itself, but is usually pronounced neutral tone in 知道, at least in "standard" mandarin. I know in Taiwan there are a lot less neutral tones and you'll probably hear fourth tone on the 道 in 知道.

I usually just add characters without pronunciation when creating a list.

Thanks for explanation lechuan.

Also, when you are doing a tone prompt for this one, it will allow you to use either the full tone or the neutral tone. (This doesn't work for reading prompts, unfortunately.)
